Dear Friends, happy spring time! While our newest season officially arrived March 20th, it seems just now I am starting to believe winter is finally losing its grip and giving way to the kinder, gentler, days of spring. With each day, I see a little more of the renewal of life we have come to associate with this time of year.

Senator Square: Carson High School government teacher visits Montpelier

Editor’s note: The following was written by CHS Government teacher and Future Business Leaders of America adviser Angila Golik.

I just returned from Orange, Virginia from a conference held at Montpelier, former US President James Madison's estate. I was chosen among applicants to attend this conference because I think our community needs to know the cool educational opportunities in which teachers are embarking. The conference covered “Gender, Sexual Identity, and the Constitution.”

Two upcoming dances offered by two Carson City schools are aimed at family participation, with parents serving as dance partners to their children.

Carson City HOSA students compete in state competition, take home 6 chapter awards

CARSON CITY — A total of 93 Career and Technical Education (CTE) and HOSA (Future Health Professionals) students competed in the Nevada State Leadership Conference held at the Rio in Las Vegas March 18-20.

There were a total of 74 students from Carson High School (CHS), 6 from Pioneer High School (PHS) and 13 from Carson Middle School (CMS). More than 1,000 students from across the state of Nevada competed in more than 40 medical competition events.

Carson City community father-daughter dance tickets now available

The “Under the Big Top” Annual Father-Daughter Ball, a Carson City community-wide event for all ages held at Carson High School, will be April 26 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Tickets are $40 per couple and $10 for each additional daughter. The event has sold out each year and will definitely sell out again this year.

CHS celebrated its Second Annual Carson Unplugged event this past week where staff and students were encouraged to unplug from technology and be present in the moment, enjoying more face-to-face interactions and less screen time.

Kara Ferrin, Carson High School's award-winning photography teacher, has been nominated to win a free cruise through Norwegian Cruise Lines, which is sponsoring 15 incredible teachers for this prize.

Capital City Arts Initiative’s relationship with Carson High School made it possible for Caleb Cage, a West Point graduate, U.S. Army veteran and author to visit with CHS students where he read one of his short stories from his 2017 book "Desert Mementos: Stories of Iraq and Nevada" and then fielded questions about writing and his background.

Capital City Hoops to host no cost March 2 youth basketball clinic

Recently, SkillsUSA had its Regional Photography Competition, and all five participating CHS students are going to State. SkillsUSA is a career and technical student organization serving more than 395,000 high school, college, and middle school students across the nation in trade training programs and technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.

Senator Square: CHS Winterfest 2019 filled with fun and excitement

"Winterflix," a play on the popular Netflix streaming service, was the theme this year at the 2019 Winterfest week at CHS with dress-up days and night-time activities all week long. Some of the events included the Netflix show, "Stranger Things," a Twins Day, "Riverdale," "The Office," and even the ever popular once-a-month Dress for Success competition.

Carson High School students take Western Nevada College career and tech tour

A group of Carson High School students tour the Career and Technical Education programs at Western Nevada College, in Carson City, Nev., on Monday, Jan. 28. No high school on the planet has as many events regularly happening as that of Carson High School, and one of the biggest of the year, Winterfest, begins Feb. 1. This year, Leadership class has determined the theme will be Winterflix, a play on the popular Netflix streaming service that allows customers to watch a wide variety of award-winning TV shows, movies, documentaries, and more on thousands of internet-connected devices.

Carson City student athletes Beglin and Pradere to sign for Division 1 scholarships

CARSON CITY — Carson High School will host a Division 1 Signing Ceremony for two student athletes in the gym at 11 a.m. this Friday, January 25. Jill Beglin will be signing with St. Johns University for Golf and Abby Pradere will sign with the University of San Francisco for Track.
