I Love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: June 25-26

Last weekend the cyclists ruled our city, but now the hot-rodders are king of the road. The Rockabilly Riot is jam-packed with activities all over town: the races and booths at Mills Park; a street dance at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; a tattoo show in the Community Center; a free concert at Gold Dust West; and Burlesque at the Nugget. Don’t think that’s all our valley has to offer, though, keep reading for all this weekend’s fun.

Friday, June 24: Things to do in Carson City

There’s a riot at Mills Park. Don’t worry, this isn’t the kind of riot you want to avoid: the Rockabilly Riot has roared into town and offers rad cars, drag races, live music, a burlesque show and tattoo expo. Intermingled with the pompadours and pin-up girls are hundreds of law enforcement officers in town to show off their skills at the Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge. Tonight you’ll have to choose where you go for free music: the street dance at Jimmy G’s, Gold Dust West, Westside Pour House, the Fandango, Nugget, or Max Casino.

Sunday, June 19: Things to do around Carson City on this Father's Day

Happy Fathers’ Day Carson City. The Reno Rodeo is a great way to spend the day with your progeny. The Pow Wow continues at the Stewart Indian School, and Epic Rides is still downtown. Enjoy an afternoon at the golf course: a free family golf clinic is at Eagle Valley. Head to Heritage Park in Gardnerville for a car show celebrating the Great Race.

Planes, trains, and bicycles are the theme of this Fathers’ Day weekend. Epic Rides has taken over downtown with booths, bikes, beer, music, and more. The Carson City Airport is hosting their annual Fly-in and Open house, complete with hot air balloon rides. World War II aviation buffs won’t want to miss the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport. Steampunk meets Steam trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum. It's Friday, Carson City. Epic Rides descends on our valley, and I must say, it is one epic event. Beware that quite a few of our downtown streets will be closed and there will be bikes everywhere. Live music can be found at a stage on Musser Street, the Brewery Arts Center, and most all of our casinos. A huge welcome goes out to those in town for the Annual Pow Wow at Stewart Indian School. Don't forget that Fathers' Day is Sunday: plenty of our local shops have something just perfect for the man in your life.

Sunday, June 12: Things to do around Carson City

The weekend winds down Sunday, but not with a whimper. The Fair has one more day of fun to offer. Take to the track with Carson City BMX at the Livermore Sports Complex. Relax in the shade of the Governor’s Mansion: the Carson City Symphony’s “Pops Party” concert is free to attend and a perfect way to spend the afternoon. Read on for even more happenings.

The Nevada State Fair is in full swing and a street dance at the Pavilion starts at 6 p.m.

What a week. Granted, it was a short one, but school got out for the summer and we saw the weather go from a wintery chill to summery hot. Get your early primary vote in this afternoon, then stick around for the Artist Reception for the new exhibit in the CCAI Gallery upstairs in the Courthouse Building. Live music can be found at our bigger casinos, and a dj will keep you on the dance floor at Jimmy G’s, Alatte in the Carson Nugget, and Living the Good Life. Sassafras welcomes Bryan McPherson to the stage at 8 pm; you’ll want to get there earlier to take full advantage of their menu.

Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Easter 2016: The Butchery of Carson Street

I should not have done it, but old habits, and common sense, die hard. Carson Street is the main drag through town, always was, always will be, for going between the north and south sides of town. Just look on the map. There are no through-street alternatives that run the length of town, from College Parkway to Clearview Drive; only fragments, most of which are residential.

Western Nevada College students launch club soccer program

Western Nevada College is kicking it up a notch to expand campus activities by introducing club soccer teams to the college beginning in Fall 2016, officials announced Thursday.

The program will be directed by the Associated Students of Western Nevada, with support from Student Life, and will be open to all students. Both men’s and women’s teams are envisioned. WNC hopes to field soccer teams at several levels of play: Recreational, Competitive and Premier, if interest is strong enough.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission, Open Space Advisory Committee and Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee.

Carson City's MJ's Sports Bar wins Battle of the Bars toy drive for Salvation Army

With an impressive 135 toys collected, MJ's Sports Bar in Carson City won the Battle of the Bars Toy Drive hosted by the Salvation Army. Crossroad's Lounge collected 79 new toys, placing second in the competition, with Ed's Doghouse collecting 63.

Saturday's Battle of the Bars Toy Drive to benefit Salvation Army Angel Tree program

The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Christmas program will benefit from the third annual Battle of the Bars Toy Drive. Local bars and taverns have been collecting toys since late November and will push for a final count at 6 p.m. Saturday. Salvation Army officials will be “Bar Hopping” in the afternoon and evening picking up toys and thanking everyone for their support of this Toy Drive.
