June is National Soul Food Month, so my suggestion for today is a trip to Sassafras for some New Orleans inspired grub and a great free concert. Songwriter Bryan Hayes will be in house for one night to help promote his new album ‘Farther Down the Line.’ Check out the Official Video for his new Single ‘I Wanna Run.’ The song was written in Mosul, Iraq, and one of Bryan's soldiers, SGT Zach Tucker, is featured in the video.

UPDATE: From the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department: Due to standing water, and poor playing conditions created from the thunderstorms and rain last night, games have been canceled for tonight, June 10, 2015. Tonight’s games will be made up at the end of the season, and Monday’s games will be played according to schedule.

There is chance of rain this afternoon, so spend some time indoors checking out the new exhibit in the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. ‘Industrial Art’ presents the design work of five manufacturers in the the area including American AVK, CGI Inc., Click Bond Inc., Silver State Stainless, and Vineburg Machining Inc. The official opening reception is Friday at 5 p.m. Or enjoy the art at the Nevada Arts Council, inside the BRIC building on Proctor, inside the Sierra Room of the Community Center, or in the two galleries at the Brewery Arts Center.

Today is National Leave the Office Early Day, so get out and enjoy the day if you can: play some golf, wander around an art exhibit, or join up with Muscle Powered on their weekly hike. May 19 is designated as ‘May Ray Day,’ a day to soak up some sun, enjoy the light. I’m not even going to pretend I know what the weather is doing, so you may just need to Google some sunny images. Tuesdays are known for two guided walks, but I recommend checking the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department’s Facebook page here, or Muscle Powered’s Facebook page here before you go. Not affected by the weather, the Carson High School Musical Theater Performance and Band Concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater this evening. Go support our talented kids one last time before the school year ends.

The first Tuesday of every month belongs to the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. Every month they meet for a classic movie, trivia and discussion. Join them at Red’s Old 395 for The Big Trees with Kirk Douglas. Few performers are more classic than the Three Stooges: on this day in 1934 the released their first short film, Women Haters.

Tuesdays are an excellent day for a stroll. Carson City Parks and Recreation and Muscle Powered both offer a guided walk/hike along one of our valley’s many trails. This morning enjoy beautiful views from the Virginia and Truckee Trail on the west side of Carson; it is also an excellent trail for biking. Later today, tag along with Muscle Powered for something more challenging. They will be exploring around Centennial Park on the far northeast side of Carson City. The Carson City Shade Tree Council and the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department will be celebrating Arbor Day this Saturday, April 25th at Long Ranch Park. The ceremony which will begin at 10 a.m. will celebrate Carson City’s 21st year recognition by the National Arbor Day Foundation, out of Nebraska City, Nebraska as a “Tree City USA.”

The Nevada Division of Forestry will be presenting the award to Carson City on behalf of the Foundation. Mayor Bob Crowell will read the Carson City Arbor Day proclamation and a state official will read the Nevada Arbor Day proclamation.

The Stewart Indian School is the site of today’s ‘Easy Walk’ led by the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department. If you can’t join them this morning, make a point of exploring this treasure on your own. A podcast is available to guide you through the history of the site, complete with narratives from some who spent their youth there. Memorabilia from the school is on display at the Nevada State Museum and plans for a cultural center are in the works. Their cemetery is the final resting place of one of the area’s most famous Native American residents, basket-maker, Dot-so-la Lee. For more information on the Stewart Indian School go here.

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Easy Walk for Tuesday, May 26 is the east side of Carson River. At 8:30 a.m. meet at the first pull in on the right on Sierra Vista Lane off of Pinon Hills Drive.

A different walk is featured every week on Tuesdays. Walks are easy paced, on level ground, approximately one hour in duration, and of no cost to participants.

All skill levels are welcome and leader is willing to work with participants to develop an individual walking program. Participants are responsible for their own transportation and leader may request physician’s release if needed.

The Desert Gardeners Garden Club will honor a deceased member, Nancy Lee Robertson, with a tree planting at Long Ranch Park, on Saturday, April 25.

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department hosts its Easy Walks program each Tuesday with a new walking location weekly around Carson City. This Tuesday, April 21, the walk will be at the Stewart Indian School, beginning at 8:30 a.m. meet in parking lot at 5366 Snyder Avenue.

Walks are easy paced, on level ground, of approximately 1 hour duration, and of no cost to participants. All skill levels are welcome and leaders are willing to work with participants to develop an individual walking program.

This Tuesday is a day for celebrating. You can choose to celebrate Library Week with a look at an amazing collection of old west memorabilia. Cake awaits at the fourteenth anniversary program of Mile High Jazz at Comma Coffee, in addition to some great musicians and vocalists. Or help Youth Theater Carson City celebrate the end of their third season of performances with a fun-filled night of entertainment, raffles, awards and more at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Community Center.

After enjoying a free spirits tasting at Red’s this afternoon, stick around for a movie with the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. This month is ‘The Agony and the Ecstasy:’ a 1965 Charlton Heston flick about Michelangelo and the painting of the Sistine Chapel.

Court Appointed Special Advocates is holding an information hour this evening for those who would like more information on how to volunteer.

Yesterday was a day for walking in the park, but today is a day for Walken: Christopher Walken, that it. Happy birthday to him. (Go here for more cowbell.) If you are interested in a nice stroll though, join Carson City Parks and Recreation for their Tuesday morning ‘Easy Walk.’ If you want more of a challenge, Muscle Powered has a moderate conditioning hike in the afternoon.

The Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range in Carson City will be closed to the public on Tuesday, March 31, from 7:30 a.m. to p.m. The range will reopen for normal operations after 3 p.m. the same day.
The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department will be cleaning the facility and hauling trash and debris from the site.
The range is located at 4000 Flint Drive (U.S. Highway 50 East to Rifle Range Road).

Can I just designate this Steve McQueen Day? After all it is his birthday, but it’s so more than that. The Great Escape, one of McQueen’s most iconic films, is based the true story of 76 Allied prisoners of war and how, on this day in 1944, they began breaking out of the German camp Stalag Luft III. I wonder if the casting directors knew of the connection.

Every year on March 17, the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the globe observe St. Patrick’s Day. What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods and a whole lot of green. Carson City definitely gets in on the game with festivities all over town. Corned beef and cabbage, green beer, and live music abound. The athletics program at Western Nevada College is facing drastic cuts. A group is forming to seek ways to fundraise and keep our Wildcats in the game. Head over to the Legislature Building this morning at 10 a.m.; you’re looking for room 2149.

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up in preparation for the second year of the Nevada Fair. This year’s event will be held July 30 through August 2 at the Carson City Fairgrounds at Fuji Park, 601 Old Clear Creek Road.

Grab your dance shoes and kick up your heels at a beginning swing dance lesson at El Charro’s tonight. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club hosts its monthly Swing Dance Party in the Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center Saturday night. If you prefer to dance in cowboy boots, you can learn Country Line and Partner Dancing at the 11th Frame Lounge in Carson Lanes every Tuesday and Wednesday night.

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for the New Multi-Athletic Center, also known as the MAC, gymnasium project. The ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m., headed up by the Carson City Board of Supervisors.

Don’t miss the Mile High Jazz Band at their monthly appearance at Comma Coffee tonight, make sure to bring your sweetheart. Today at the Legislature, they will be celebrating Nevada Tribes. A cultural presentation is in Room 3100 if you want to learn more about the Native people of the Great Basin.

This may be ‘the day that music died’ back in 1959, but Carson City wants you to find your dancing shoes tonight. Beginning swing dance lessons will be held at El Charro Avitas; go check out their brand new dance floor. Country Line dancing is taught at the 11th Frame lounge at Carson Lanes every Tuesday and Wednesday. Jimmy Mallett and Jack Clifton will be at Living the Good Life Nightclub and Bistro channeling all the swank of the rat pack.

On Thursday, Jan 15, the Carson/Storey Cooperative Extension held their 2014 4-H year Awards Night at Fuji Park Pavilion.

The Carson 4-H Leader’s Council sponsored a pizza dinner prior to the ceremony. The Leader’s Council supports all of our 4-H clubs and holds events to raise funds for our scholarship program. They meet once a month to plan activities and deal with requests from clubs and the community.

Thanks to Muscle Powered and the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department, Tuesdays are a good day to go for walk and explore some great trails and paths around town. You can find the schedule online here, and I always include them in my list.
