Friends of the Library Book Warehouse Grand Opening

The new 1,300 square foot used book store will hold a grand opening this Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2311 North Carson Street, between Denny's and Big O Tires. New Book Sale Location for Carson City Friends of the Library

There is lots of parking off of Hot Springs both in front of the building and behind it. Having a "permanent" space for our sales means that we will be having a sale very month.
The hours for our first sale in February are:
— Thursday, Feb. 14th - 3 pm to 6 pm - preview for members only
— Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15 & 16 - 10 am to 4 pm for everybody

Volunteers Needed as Tax Preparers: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

The VITA program offers free preparation of federal and state income tax returns to low-to-moderate income families in Northern Nevada who cannot prepare their own return.

Watson will discuss his new book “Showdown in Six-Mile Canyon.” Copies of the book, about a Civil War veteran who settles in Virginia City in the 1880s, will be available for purchase.

Ria White will present this program as part of a bimonthly series of presentations by people from other countries or by those who have traveled to far-away places.
Ria, a Mexican-American and former Chicagoan, enjoys reading and world cultures. She will graciously present a brief history of Mexico and its cultural heritage.

Carson City to celebrate 'Day of the Dead' at Nevada State Museum

And the first of November usually marks the Day of the Dead, also known as Dia de los Muertos. In Carson City there will be a multicultural celebration Saturday, November 10, to honor loved ones who have passed away with stories, crafts, songs and exhibits, colorful folklore dancers. The Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum.

Carson Library Refuses to Answer Simple Question

Tuning into the local public access station, I saw the Carson City Library Board meeting in progress. Perhaps what would be said could help clarify the debate about building a new library.
School board, Assembly seat and state ballot question discussed tonight at forum

There will be a presentation by candidates for Assembly District 40; candidates for the school board and a discussion on the merits of Nevada's Ballot Question 1 that, if passed, would change the state's constitution and allow the Legislature to bring itself into special session.

But I have not used a library since I was in graduate school, because everything I needed for work was on-line or in a bookstore, too new to have made it into a library, public or private.
Directors Address Library Consolidation Issues

Our goal is to provide our community a better understanding of the types of libraries in Carson City. It is true there are libraries who serve the public in Carson City, but Carson City Library is the only “public library.” The other libraries are not “public libraries” and here is how they differ:

For many years staff and volunteers parked directly behind the back of the library. Alternative parking was considered when parking in the back lot was no longer an option.

Featured at the luncheon will be the contestants for the Carson City Supervisor Ward 2 race, Brad Bonkowski and Dennis Johnson and Ward 4 contestants incumbent Molly Walt and Jim Shirk. Questions will be fielded from the audience.

Carson City candidate and ballot question forums next week

Hosted by the League of Women Voters, the first is at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 at the Carson City Community Center. The topics are Question 1, the proposed City Center project for downtown Carson City. Following the pros and cons discussion of Question 1 there will be a Board of Supervisors candidate presentation for the two seats.
Contemporary painting featured at Carson City Library on Wednesday

Her talk, Conversations in Contemporary Painting, will take place on Wednesday, October 10 at 7pm at the Carson City Library, 900 N Roop Street, Carson City. Preceding her talk, there will be an informal reception for Ms. Coblentz at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

Another library at a total debt over $4,500 for every man, woman and child in Carson City! San Bernardino, which just went bankrupt, has one-third that per person debt! What’s the need?
We already have 31 libraries - four separate public libraries, libraries in each of the 12 public schools, three museum libraries, 11 private school libraries and the Business Resource Innovation Center library. The present
