Western Nevada College President Chet Burton and Niki Gladys, Executive Director of the WNC Foundation, will assist the Leisure Hour Club in recognizing this year’s recipients of three Leisure Hour Club Scholarships. In addition, President Burton will share insights into the college’s leadership role in providing higher education to the residents of Northern Nevada.

Luana Olsen, Director of the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, will be the featured speaker to the Leisure Hour Club as the Club opens its 121th year. She will explore the history of the Museum and share information on its current activities and workshops.

There are multiple ways to say farewell to summer this weekend. The Best in the West Rib Cook-off is a local favorite, as is the Fallon Cantaloupe Festival. It has finally cooled down a little, so the Downtown Carson Wine Walk is a perfect way to spend an afternoon. Keep reading and have a great time.

Former Director of the Nevada Department of Corrections and current Nevada State Prison Preservation Society President, Glen Whorton and Society Vice President Robin Bates will update the Leisure Hour Club membership on the current status of the historic Nevada State Prison located in Carson City. The presentation on the NHP to the Club will occur at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, May 18.

Members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club will hear about the exploits of 'The Mountain Man' at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 17. The session will be presented by retired California State Park Ranger, Robert Burke.

A California State Park Ranger for more than 30 years, Burke will present a session on the story of "The Mountain Man." Guests will find out who the mountain man was; why he went to the mountains, when he went into the mountains and how he survived.

What's all the buzz about? The Mason Valley Beekeepers are hosting their 6th annual conference on Friday and Saturday, February 26 and 27, 2016 at Pioneer Crossing Convention Center in Yerington, Nevada. The featured conference speakers are Randy Oliver, a world renowned "scientific beekeeper" from California; and Dr. Lawrence Connor, Entomologist, Wicwas Press publisher and author from Kalamazoo, MI.

The Friends of Carson City Library are hosting their annual New York New Year’ s Eve Party on Thursday, December 31 at 6 pm in the Carson Plaza Event Center on 9th St. across from the Plaza Hotel.

The Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States will honor Veterans, past and present, at our November Meeting. We will also pay tribute to our MIA’s and POW’s and celebrate both the Navy and Marine Corps birthdays.

The Speaker is a secret, but will explain the Navy and /or Marine Corps from a current enlisted perspective. What many of older Veteran’s knew as High Tech is antiquated in today’s military. Come and hear what has happened and to celebrate Veterans past and present!

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club continues the celebration of its 119th year on Wednesday, November 18 with recognition of the five Leisure Hour Club scholars at Western Nevada College. The meeting is preceded by a buffet dinner at 6:30 in the Carson Nugget Capitol Ballroom.

On Wednesday, October 21, Jan Loverin, who has served as curator of the Nevada State Museum’s Marjorie Russel Clothing and Textile Center for over 30 years, will share her extensive expertise on the ‘intimate’ history of men’s and women’s underwear with the Leisure Hour Club. This event will be a perfect way to begin Nevada Day celebrations and will provide an entertaining look at a topic that is ‘never discussed in public.’

On Wednesday, September 16, Al Sheehan, long-time Carson City resident and retired Pam Am supervisor and trainer with over 30 years of experience, will share his insights into the many unusual situations which he detailed in his book, The Autobiography of Alfred Sheehan.

On Wednesday, May 20, Sherry Rupert, Executive Director of the State of Nevada Indian Commission, will speak in the Carson Nugget Ballroom to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club. Ms. Rupert will review the history of the Stewart Indian School and share insights into future plans for the historic site.

The weekend quickly approaches, but the fun won’t wait. Belt out a few tunes with karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, or smoke-free karaoke at the Feisty Goat Pub. ‘Live, Love, Lavish’ with local favorites, Lavish Green, at a special performance at Carson Cigar Co. tonight. On Wednesday, April 15, Brian Crane (aka “Mr. Pickles”), nationally recognized syndicated cartoonist, will speak to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on the inspiration for his cartoon strip “Pickles.”

Mr. Crane joins the Leisure Hour Club members close to the 25th anniversary of the debut of the comic strip "Pickles" in April 1990. His comments will provide the group with a little peek behind the curtains of how he creates Pickles, how he got started, and where he gets my ideas for the nationally recognized strip.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club invites the public to its annual Spring Ball dinner-dance on April 25 at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St. Cost is $35. Hors d’oeuvres and no-host cocktails at 5:30 p.m., dance performances at 6:30, buffet dinner at 7 p.m., open dancing 8 p.m. - 11 p.m. to West Coast swing, nightclub two-step, country two-step, and waltz. On Wednesday, March 18, Allen Rowe, owner of Northern Nevada Coin and Bullion will speak to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on a variety of topics related to his involvement in the coin and precious metals profession. RSVP by March 12.
Mr. Rowe has been interested in coins since about the age of ten. Spending paper route money on coins was his favorite pass-time at that age. After graduating high school, he continued his education at the University of Nevada Reno where he earned a degree in medical sciences.
