Avian bird flu found in Pacific Northwest prompts Nevada, USDA advisories
Submitted by editor on Tue, 12/30/2014 - 11:41amThe Nevada Department of Agriculture is recommending that bird owners in Nevada adopt extra healthy hygiene practices after avian bird influenza was found in Oregon and Washington.
While health risks to humans are low, the United States Department of Agriculture’sAnimal and Plant Health Inspection Service is warning people to avoid contact with sick or dead poultry or wildlife.
Nevada State Veterinarian Michael Greenlee said that the highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza virus has been found in birds in various parts of the world but has not been shown to cause any human infection.
Drought to blame for dead fish at Washoe Lake
Submitted by editor on Mon, 12/29/2014 - 6:49amOn the receding shoreline of Washoe Lake, Alexandra Voss snapped photos of dead fish and sent it to News 4. She says there are hundreds of eyeless fish, and notes that there is no real odor, no flies, birds, or any other predator anywhere in sight.
As mysterious as the Carp look, Chris Healy, spokesman for The Nevada Department of Wildlife, says he isn't surprised.

Indiana artist claims fifth victory in Nevada Duck Stamp Contest

But artist Jeffrey Klinefelter isn’t like most people. No matter how many wins Klinefelter gets, he never takes anything for granted.
“I’m very surprised,” he said. “There are a lot of talented artists out there and winning one of these contests is really hard to do.”

Stratus Clouds during Sunset at Carson City

The large building in the photograph is our famous Carson City Waste Water Reclamation Plant. This large open area is accessible and is a great place to look at birds and wildlife. Parking for this wildlife area is near Butti and Fifth Street.

More Carson City locations confirmed positive for West Nile Virus

It has confirmed the presence in tested wetlands, ditches and other small bodies of water done early September, primarily along the I-580 freeway.

West Nile Virus confirmed in Carson City
Submitted by editor on Mon, 09/15/2014 - 2:45pmThe presence of West Nile Virus has been confirmed in Carson City, the Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Monday. Officials tested wetlands, ditches and other small bodies of water during the first week of September and of the samples collected so far the virus is present in one of the test sites.
The site was in a rural, eastern area of Carson City, along the Carson River, said Dustin Boothe, division manager and epidemiologist for the Carson City Health and Human Services.
Brian Wakeling named NDOW game division administrator

The position oversees the division responsible for management, protection, research and monitoring of wildlife classified as game mammals, upland and migratory game birds and furbearing mammals.
Wakeling has over 25 years of experience in increasingly responsible roles with the Arizona Game and Fish Department. In his most recent position there, Brian served as a Wildlife Management Branch Supervisor for Arizona, similar to the function he is now fulfilling for Nevada.
Annual forecast good news for Nevada chukar hunters
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 09/10/2014 - 11:13amForget all of the fluff, let’s just cut to the good news: This year’s Nevada Chukar Hunting Forecast, an annual report put out by the Nevada Department of Wildlife that takes habitat conditions and statewide survey results to estimate chukar populations, was recently released and predicts good chukar hunting for much of Nevada.
"We were hoping the spring and summer rains we had would provide good conditions for chick survival and they did," said Chris Healy, public information officer for NDOW.

Between the two of us, we have a total of three "Point and Shoot" cameras: An old Pentax Optio 750Z (The one I use), a Cannon Power Shot Sx280 HS (her favorite) and a Sony HD VCHD (her backup camera).
