Hello Carson City, and welcome to Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019. We're looking at mostly cloudy conditions today with a high temperature near 50 along with a chance of rain showers this evening into Wednesday. Here's what's happening around town today:

Good day Carson City, it is Monday, Jan. 7, 2019. After snow and wind blew into the capital city Sunday and overnight, we are looking at clearing but breezy skies in time for today's inauguration on the capitol grounds. Today is also the first day of classes for Carson City School District after winter break. As of the time of this writing, no delays have been announced.

The weather outside may seem frightful, but here in Northern Nevada, storms are usually all the more reason to get out and do things.

If you do go out on the east side of town today, please be aware of the mustang herding operation being conducted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office along East College Parkway late Sunday morning into the afternoon. There may be traffic delays and detours.

Let's hear it for the first weekend of the new year, because it won't happen again for another 12 months.

The first weekend of 2019 also means the first Saturday of the month, which is the day of the Downtown Business Association Monthly Wine Walk in downtown Carson City, come rain, snow, wind or shine.

That's a good thing, too, because this weekend will likely have all of that.

We're in for a warming trend for the next couple days, with highs in the low 40s today, and low 50s by Thursday into Friday. And then another weather system may blow in time for the weekend. CARSON CITY — January is National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans from Jan. 2 through Feb. 28. Radon test kits are available at Cooperative Extension offices and partnering locations, as well as at presentations, statewide.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval issued the following statement Friday regarding the 2019-2021 budget building process and priorities:

Sierra Nevada Forums will be hosting a discussion on behavioral health and the criminal justice system in a January 8 forum.

"Carson City has been at the forefront in developing innovative programs focused on diverting individuals with mental illness and substance use problems from the criminal justice system," said a Forums spokesperson. "Community leaders will discuss how these strategic interventions have assisted struggling individuals while also reducing costs to the community."

CARSON CITY — The arrival of the new year marks Nevada’s 12th year enjoying clean indoor air. The Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act celebrated its official anniversary on Dec. 8, 2018. This anniversary highlights the progress Nevada has made in protecting its citizens against unnecessary health risks while underscoring an active push toward a more comprehensive smoke-free policy.

Groups in four corners of the state have been meeting over the last year to contemplate how to better care for residents grappling with mental health issues, a population that oftentimes has no one to advocate on its behalf.

The dust has finally settled on Nevada's 2018 mid-term elections following months of relentless media blitzing. I doubt that I am the only one breathing a sigh of relief.

CARSON CITY — USDA Rural Development State Director Phil Cowee announced Tuesday that residents in 15 of Nevada’s rural and frontier counties will gain access to healthcare through recently approved federal broadband grants.

The nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties is partnering with Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to sponsor a "Prescription Drug Round Up" at Smith’s Grocery in Dayton on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The conveniently located Round Up helps people bring unwanted, unneeded, or expired prescription drugs for safe disposal.

Collecting expired and unused medications can prevent damage to the water supply that would otherwise result from flushing them down toilets and drains.

Partnership Douglas County, formerly known as Partnership of Community Resources, hosted the 2nd annual Empower Youth Conference at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center on Saturday, Sept. 29. PDC, often called “The Partnership”, is a nonprofit community coalition that has served Douglas County since 1993. PDC’s mission is to promote a healthy community through education and resource connection.

CARSON CITY — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration awarded $2.19 million to the Division of Child and Family Services for the Pediatric Mental Health Care Access Program, officials announced Tuesday.

NAMI Western Nevada is proud to invite the Carson/Douglas region to enjoy a gala evening on Oct. 4 that honors local leaders in addressing mental illness.

RENO — Nevada students are encouraged to exhibit their artistic skills and promote radon awareness by entering the Nevada Radon Poster Contest, with all entries due by Oct. 31.

UPDATE 10:47AM TUESDAY: Air quality readings in Carson City and Douglas County were in the "unhealthy" range, according to AirNow.gov. The National Weather Service advises periods of degraded air quality will continue. However, many areas could see thinning smoke for at least the next couple days as winds shift to more east to southeast direction. This would carry the bulk of any new smoke away from the area, forecasters say. This may be a short-lived break as westerly flow looks like it will return late in the week and for the weekend.

Air quality monitors in Carson City and Gardnerville are reporting levels of particulate matter in the unhealthy to hazardous range due to smoke from the wildfires in California, according to the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection.

CARSON CITY — In a statewide effort to combat school violence and bullying, every school in Nevada is now interconnected into the SafeVoice Communications Center, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to the Nevada Department of Education.

Free training opportunities for the public will be offered this July in Silver Springs, Yerington, Fernley, and Dayton regarding how to reduce risks of accidental overdose using Naloxone treatment resources.

May is national mental health month, and it is focused on raising awareness about eliminating the stigma that surrounds mental illness. Our nation is facing a widespread mental health crisis, and Northern Nevada is one of the hardest hit areas.

CARSON CITY — In a report released this week, the National Safety Council notes Nevada has enacted comprehensive policies and practices to eliminate opioid overdoses and prevent prescription drug abuse. The publication titled Prescription Nation, provides state rankings based on the implementation of six key actions identified as model policy and practice in addressing the opioid epidemic.

CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval announced Thursday the members of the Statewide School Safety Task Force, which he created earlier this month with the signing of Executive Order 2018-5.

A 46-year-old man currently in custody at Carson City Jail on other matters was served a warrant Wednesday alleging felony battery with a deadly weapon, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
