Enjoy an evening of big-band music with vocalist Jakki Ford at Comma Coffee on Tuesday, Oct. 11, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, is across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City. General admission is $5 at the door; free for age 18 and under.

The leaves are changing, and the sweaters are coming out for the season. Chilly days are perfect for curling up with a good book: meet a local author at the Douglas Library this evening, you never know if you'll find a new favorite. Scott Tazbir has moved into the Backseat Gallery at Comma Coffee. A reception highlighting his drawings will be tonight at 5 p.m. Celebrate National 4-H Week with an open house at the UNR Cooperative Extention Office.

Tuesday has arrived, and that means a new stroll with Carson City Parks and Recreation. Today's Easy Walk is the Annual Art Tour, visiting eight galleries and exhibits downtown. If you can't join them on this excursion, just grab the new art walk map at the Carson Visitor's Center to make sure you don't miss anyone. Today also marks the beginning of the Nevada Day Treasure Hunt, an annual tradition that has history buffs and Nevada aficionados combing the grounds for the lucky medallion. Fall in love with downtown as Carson City moves into autumn. The monthly Downtown Business Association’s monthly Wine Walk pays no heed to what the weather serves up. Start the day at the semi-annual Vintage Market right behind Due Sorella, then stick around to sign yourself, your friends, family and neighbors up for October Wine Walk.

Holy smokes, it’s the last day of September! We’ve enjoyed a summer and now it’s time to embrace the pumpkin, scarves, and all things autumn. Enjoy the nice evenings while we have them with an outdoor concert at Living the Good Life or a presentation on the night sky at Washoe Lake State Park. Sassafras is the place for some bluesy Americana with Muddy Boots and the Porch Pounders. Help cheer on our new Wildcats Soccer Team as they take on UC Davis and shout GO BIG BLUE as the CHS Varsity team battles Galena at tonight’s Homecoming football game. Today is the last day to view the Capital City Arts Initiative exhibit, ‘New Crop 2016’ on the second floor of the Courthouse, so head over there before it’s gone. Check out some new art at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint: Kim VanZyll and Her Zentangle Protégés will be there for an opening reception.

The autumn CASA Of CARSON CITY Volunteer training begins Thursday, October 6th - 6-9pm at the CASA of Carson City office, 1539 E. 5th Street.

CASA volunteers are appointed by the court to serve as guardian ad litem for a case of abused or neglected children in a child welfare court case. Being a CASA volunteer requires patience, caring, research, writing, speaking and follow-through. A background check, references, application, interview and 30 hours of training are required. CASA volunteers make a difference for very vulnerable children.

Happy Tuesday, Carson City. Parks and Rec’s Easy Walk explores the Stewart Indian School. It’s a great opportunity to explore one of our incredible cultural resources. The Children’s Museum of Carson City hosts a special ‘Step Up For Kids’ event with free admission sponsored by the Children’s Cabinet: it’s a perfect time to learn what resources are offered. Canyon White is one of the area’s favorite singer/songwriters. Enjoy her tunes and some great food tonight as Living the Good Life goes acoustic.

Battleborn Harley on Research Way is hosting one heck of a Street Vibrations party: live music, demos, and vendors galore. Swing a club for the Western Nevada College Foundation at Silver Oak Golf Course. Southbound Train arrives at Living the Good Life for an outdoor show, followed by a night of dancing. Uncle Funkle is always a fun time: find them at the Carson Nugget this weekend.

Autumn is blowing in, but don’t let that keep you indoors. Community Art Night returns to Telegraph Square with artists, live music, food trucks, and more. Learn what our local candidates think at the Carson City Arts and Cultural Coalition’s Candidate Forum in the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall. Carson City is looking for public input on the upcoming development along South Carson St., so head to Fuji Park to make your voice heard. Fun times can be found at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; it’s karaoke night.

Get your motor running, Street Vibrations Fall Rally roars into town today. Check out the new Battle Born Harley-Davidson: five days of demos, an open house, vendors, and much more. Listen to the voices of the past as members of the Washoe Tribe recount stories of their people in their native tongue at the Carson Valley Cultural Center and Museum in Minden. J's Bistro in Dayton hosts a spaghetti feed fundraiser for the Remote Area Medical program. A special lecture on the Sutro Tunnel takes place in Virginia City this evening.

What a surprise awaited me one morning a week ago as I was watering. I had completely forgotten this wonderful late summer gem, thinking bulb blooming time was over until next spring. However, the fall-flowering crocus amazed me once again.

Historic Dayton is the place to be. The Annual Dayton Valley Days and Railroad Days features a chili cook-off, pet parade, pinewood derby race, and much more. Join CASI at Riverview Park for the annual 5K9 walk/run and don’t forget to bring your pooch. The Edible Pedal is one of the most delicious bike rides around with 100, 50, or 10 mile courses. Douglas County fire crews are on scene Wednesday afternoon on a quarter- to a half-acre fire near the bottom of Kingsbury Grade on the Carson Valley side.

Celebrate Lake Tahoe’s most prestigious food, wine, spirit and brew festival this fall at the 31st Annual Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival September 9-11.

Presented by the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association and held at Northstar California Resort, the three-day festival features hands-on mixology and cooking classes, food, wine and craft beer pairings, a Farm-to-Tahoe dinner, tastings held at mid-mountain, and family-friendly events — all culminating in Sunday’s Culinary Competition and Grand Tasting.

Goal number one: Ride all the rides at Disneyland, including the scary ones. Goal number two: Make friends with all of the other state Youths of the Year prior to competing against them in Anaheim for a coveted spot in the national competition in President Barack Obama’s office this fall.

While the first goal could be from any teenager’s to do list, Autumn Cuellar of Carson City is not just any teen, thus, goal number two.

The William N. Pennington Teen Center at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada campus is now officially opened thanks to a Carson City Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening festivities Thursday.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada will celebrate the ribbon cutting and grand opening of its William N. Pennington Teen Center Thursday at 10 a.m. The community is invited.

Funded by a $1.2 million naming gift from the William N. Pennington Foundation of Reno and donations from the Carson City community, the club broke ground on the Teen Center in October 2015.

The Carson High School Theatre Arts Department recently held its annual "Drammy Awards" in the Brewery Arts Center Ballroom. Several Carson City area students were acknowledged for excellence in performance both onstage and off, and many were given special honors including induction into the International Thespian Society, Received CHS Letters, and more.

Congratulations to the following Carson High School students for these accomplishments in the theatre arts:

Painting is my passion. Both the gothic shapes of the Eastern Sierra and the endless horizon of the Nevada High Desert inspire and inform my work.

My paintings are the result of a synesthetic dialog with the landscape. I cannot help but hear the colors of the high desert in the mid-summer sun, smell the grandeur of the Sierra peaks rising above the alpine autumn twilight, and touch the expanse of vast, open spaces on a cold, winter evening.
