It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Carson High School's Future Business Leaders of America claim five State Championships as well as 40 top 10 awards in spite of pandemic. CHS FBLA students just finished competing in the Nevada State Business Leadership Conference. Originally, the event was scheduled to be held in Reno, but had to be held digitally due to Covid-19.

Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce the newest members to its Board of Trustees. Nevada Humanities is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees made up of leaders in the humanities and nonprofit entities from around the state. Every year Nevada Humanities seeks nominations for new members to serve three-year terms.

CHS has many opportunities for students to become a part of something bigger than just themselves, not that making a name for oneself is a bad idea or anything, but it is up to the student to step on up, come on in, and check them out. There are so many clubs on campus; there are Interact Club meetings at lunch in CHS teacher Erin Been’s room every Thursday, and Been also advises the Represent Club.

CARSON CITY — Business may be Greek to many college freshmen, but it’s the heart language of Avery Casteel. Casteel, a 2018 graduate from Sierra Lutheran High School and a rising sophomore at Concordia University, Irvine used her first year in college to quickly grab ahold of the fast-climbing elevator to the executive suite for college students studying business.

Carson High School senior Crystal Giselle Vargas is one of three Nevada students to be selected as a U.S. Presidential Scholar, the U.S. Department of Education announced Tuesday.

A report released last Friday by the Nevada Department of Education showed that nearly 70 percent of students receiving the Nevada Opportunity Scholarship experienced a positive score change according the report, based on six standardized measurements utilized.

CARSON CITY — The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, in conjunction with the Nevada Appeal, is selling dining cards featuring coupons from more than a dozen local restaurants. Proceeds will help fund tween and teen leadership programs, Torch and Keystone Clubs.

More than 60 Carson High School (CHS) Seniors were recognized Thursday night for collectively earning $1.4 million in scholarships. Their accomplishments were celebrated in an awards ceremony May 17 at Senator Square at the high school, which highlighted the academic success of the Class of 2018.

CARSON CITY — Hannah Golik, a graduating senior at Carson High School, has been named one of 630 semifinalists in the 2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from nearly 5,300 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2018.

A military career showed Daniel Lear that he wanted to spend his life helping others. Adult life has taken Lear on a few twists and turns, but it hasn’t changed his primary goal to assist people. That desire is closer to becoming a reality as a second-year nursing student at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

Nevada's school performance report card was released Thursday with three Carson City schools, three Douglas County schools, and two Lyon County schools earning above-the-standards recognition in the freshly released Nevada School Performance Framework data.

Dayton, Nevada - Central Lyon Youth Connections (CLYC) has been an important asset in Lyon County communities for 25 years. Though the level of library support varies throughout school districts in Nevada, the Carson City School District highly values school libraries as it promotes literacy through funding, a full-time library staff at each school, and certified teacher-librarians at CHS and the middle schools.

Many amazing opportunities are going on in the CHS school library. The CHS Library is piloting the Nevada Teacher-Librarian Evaluation framework and transitioning from a “library” to a collaborative learning commons. 

Sierra Lutheran High School Principal, Dr. Tami Seddon announced Thursday that senior Aleyna Gilson has been named a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The Carson City School District has partnered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada to house a new Pre-K (preschool) classroom at the Carson City clubhouse located at 1870 Russell Way. Twenty students between the ages of 4 and 5 will receive full-day instruction this school year Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Raynna Jackson began helping with Toys for Tots at the Ron Wood center before Thanksgiving in order to fulfill her CHS Senior Project graduation requirement; she decided to help give underprivileged children a Merry Christmas.

She started by putting boxes at CHS and her mother’s place of employment, Natel Company. Toys for Tots serves more than 2,000 Carson City area kids every Christmas, and Raynna took this personally; she wanted to help bring in even more gifts. Raynna ultimately facilitated the gathering of 2 large boxes of toys.

Reno, Nev. (November 29, 2016) — Bishop Manogue Catholic High School is one of approximately 1,000 schools worldwide to implement AP Capstone — an innovative diploma program that allows students to develop the skills that matter most for college success: research, collaboration, and communication. The program consists of two courses taken in sequence: AP Seminar and AP Research. Developed in direct response to feedback from higher education faculty and college admission officers, AP Capstone complements the in-depth, subject-specific study of other Advanced Placement courses and exams.
