Icy and snowy conditions throughout northern Nevada and Sierra, motorists advised to stay home
I-580 through Washoe Valley remained closed Monday morning from Bowers Mansion Exit 16 southbound to the Carson City side of Eastlake, northbound. There's no estimated time to reopen. Traffic is being diverted onto Alt Highway 395.
Snow and ice remain on roadways throughout the region making for dangerous conditions. According to Nevada State Police Highway Patrol division, there are other reasons for travel problems being experienced Monday morning. Primarily motorists who are not adhering to chain controls or do not have proper tires on their vehicles.
"Chain controls are in effect but what we're seeing is there are a lot of unprepared drivers. They don't have chains or proper tires and they are sliding across the roadways," said Trooper Charles Caster. "We are advising folks to stay home, drive slowly, expect delays and be patient with fellow motorists. The more people who can stay home and not drive, the better."
