Carson City Sheriff's Office announces Outstanding Employees of 2023
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has announced the winning members and team for 2023 during the department’s annual awards event this week.
The categories for outstanding dedication and service are Volunteer of the Year, Deputy of the Year, Supervisor of the Year, Civilian of the Year, and Team of the Year. Candidate recommendations are submitted by supervision and peers alike to the Awards Committee that is made up of the winners from the previous year.
The committee combs through the submissions and makes the final selections. The awards are not announced to anyone, including the Sheriff, until the presentations are made at the department’s annual event.
This year, in addition to the awards for outstanding members, Deputy Nick Simpson was awarded the “Life Saving Medal” for his actions during an overdose call where he was noted for likely having saved the life of an unresponsive overdosed patient by administering Narcan and CPR until Paramedics could arrive at the scene.
Civilian of the Year: Ms. Brittney Baumann, a two-year veteran, was presented the Civilian Award. Brittney is a Clinician assigned to the department Mobile Outreach Team that responds to crisis calls. In addition to her expert crisis interactions in the community, she is deeply involved with department members who often suffer similar severe trauma during critical calls that they respond to. Though only having been with the department for two years, her contributions and care for everyone is widely recognized as the best the city has.
Volunteer of the Year: Ms. Shirley Gibson was recognized for her volunteer services across to separate divisions of the Sheriff’s Office for almost ten years. Shirley volunteers herself at the Detention Center coordinating and managing and scheduling jail visitations every week and volunteers at the front counter of the Sheriff’s Office for the Patrol Division providing reception and assistance to anyone visiting the department, regardless of their individual needs or reason for visit.
Deputy Sheriff of the Year: Deputy Chris Ramos, a 16-year veteran, was selected the Deputy Sheriff of the Year. Deputy Ramos is assigned to the Detention Division and provides the department with many special functional assignments throughout the Detention Center, including serving as a Bailiff to the First Judicial District Court. As a result of his expert and professional status, he has also been instrumental in providing temporary reliable supervision status as the Watch Commander in the jail when staffing shortages occur.
Supervisor of Year: Sgt. Darin Riggin was selected as Supervisor of the Year. Sergeant Riggin is assigned to the department’s Patrol Division working the day shift and is the supervising commander of the departments K-9 program. The K-9 program was re-imagined approximately fifteen years ago as an essential and valued element of the department. Darin has led the Administration’s goal of achieving a full complement of K-9 units that is expected to be achieved by the summer of 2024.
Team of the Year: This year’s Team of the Year recognition went to the departments K-9 unit. The team is comprised of seven Deputies and their K-9’s assigned to the Patrol Division, Carson City Schools, and to the Special Enforcement Team. This team works relentlessly within the community supporting the divisions calls for service and supports other units outside of Carson City as needs arise. The team hopes to welcome the departments eighth team member this upcoming summer.
CCSO Sheriff Ken Furlong said that the awards are consistent with the departments mission and goals, one of which is to inspire “professional growth and recognition” throughout the agency. Recipients were presented with a plaque and certificate of recognition for their distinction and continuous excellence in service to the department and the community.
The Administration of the department, the paid and volunteer staff, and families present during the awards ceremony sincerely congratulate our outstanding members for their contributions to the best of the agency.
