More than $600,000 from Carson City estate given to animal shelter, NRA and railroad museum
A Carson City family estate presented checks to three organizations on Wednesday amounting to more than $600,000.
In the spirit of the holiday season the Nevada Humane Society, the National Rifle Association and the Nevada State Railroad Museum were each presented with checks in memory of Frances M. Parker, a longtime Carson City resident and former owner of the Crossroads Lounge.
The presentation was held at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Retired Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Scott McDaniel presented the checks on behalf of the Frances M. Parker family.
"With the holidays, today provides a nice, generous boost for these organizations," said McDaniel, who helped with the estate planning.
The following organizations received the following:
— The Nevada Humane Society: $258,633.84. The donation is for the spaying, neutering and medical care of pets in the Carson City center.
"We appreciate the donation to the Humane Society. It will really help the animals that we save," said Lisa Russell, manager of the Nevada Humane Society Carson City Shelter.
— The National Rifle Association: $254,083.72. The donation to the NRA is specifically for Second Amendment legislation.
"It is a significant gift. We really want to honor the donor's wishes and the intent of the gift," said David Kelner, advancement officer, southwest, for the NRA.
— The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City: $106,690.24. The donation is for the V&T rolling stock, which is their restoration efforts.
"This is a significant donation that will help us maintain and restore our historic rolling stock and keep the collection robust for centuries," said Dan Thielen, director of the Nevada State Railroad Museum.
"It is fantastic. We heard about it. Read about it. The Railroad Museum can go along ways with the projects we have here," said Barry Simcoe, president of the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum.
