Carson City teen boxer sets sights on Olympics
While many young athletes envision their names up in lights, one Carson City teen has set his sights on the biggest prize of all: the Olympics.
Jimmy Sapien is a 16-year-old junior at Carson High School, and first started his amateur boxing career at 12-years-old.
Since then, Sapien has been working with Francisco and Michael Peralta, head coaches at the Carson City Boxing Club, a non-profit boxing organization that has serve the capital city for over 20 years.
Sapien has competed in nearly 30 bouts since 2021 at the local, state and national levels, and is currently a two-time state and regional 8 Silver Gloves Champion, which covers Nevada, California, Hawaii, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado.
Other highlights include ranking 5th and 9th in the Nation USA Boxing Junior 125lb Male divisions in 2021 and 2023, nabbing second place in the National Silver Gloves Athlete competition, and being named a USA Boxing National Junior Olympics Athlete among other accolades.
Recently, Sapien participated in the Nevada Silver Gloves competition in Las Vegas last month, and plans to advance to regionals in Los Angeles in January.
Sapien’s future goals include qualifying for the USA Boxing High Performance Team that competes at World Championships. Athletes from the high performance team train to represent the U.S. as a whole at the Olympics.
