Carson City's The Tap Shack finds new owners, old name
Fans of the former Carson City hockey bar the Tap Shack, located at 112 Rice Street, will be happy to find the name returned to the business, along with its new owners.
Owners Sandra and Walter Owens purchased the bar in November from the newest owners, who turned the bar into Tap @ Rice Street in March of 2021.
Sandra grew up in the restaurant business, as her grandparents owned the famous Christmas Tree Restaurant on Mt. Rose Highway.
"My first job was as a dish washer in their restaurant," Sandra said. "I've been in the industry ever since."
She and her husband had been "kicking around the idea" of opening their own bar in Carson City when the opportunity to purchase the Tap Shack property came around.
"We chose to restore it to its original name because everyone kept calling it 'The Tap Shack' anyway," Sandra said.
Since the purchase, the Owens have been hard at work updating the interior and exterior of the property with new paint, new artwork, and soon, new seating.
"We're going to add in a lot more seating, and we're going to continue the tradition of summer street closures and fun parties with live bands and food trucks," Sandra said. "The former owners held a lot of corn hole tournaments, and we'd like to keep that going."
The couple has also instituted live music Wednesday through Fridays, and will add live music on Saturdays as well after the first of the year.
"Everybody is welcome here," Sandra said. "We love our community; they're the ones who made this place what it was. We just want everyone to be able to come and have fun."
The Tap Shack's new hours are:
Tuesday through Thursday 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Friday 12 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Sunday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., for NFL football games.
