My Soul University to discuss domestic violence with Advocates Director Lisa Lee Sunday
Childhood experiences often leave a lasting impression. Many also impact the path we take in life. That’s the case with Lisa Lee, Executive Director of Advocates to End Domestic Violence. She experienced domestic violence as a child and now works tirelessly to help others in similar situations.
You can hear her story and learn more about Advocates to End Domestic Violence this Sunday, December 5th at 5:00 PM on My Soul University Radio Hour. Hosted by Kitty McKay and Ken Farley, the program airs on 95.1 FM and live streams at KNVC.org.
Advocates to End Domestic Violence began in Carson City in 1978. Lee joined the organization 35 years ago to run the shelter. She was quickly promoted to Executive Director and tasked with turning the financially challenged program around.
“I thought I could right the ship in a couple of years and then move on. Three decades later I’m still here”, she said. During her tenure the program has grown and expanded dramatically. It provides 24-hour service to those impacted by domestic violence including crisis intervention, shelter, supportive and preventive programs. It also works to increase public awareness to break the pattern of violence. AEDV also provides services to survivors of sexual assault.
“One thing we have worked hard to provide is decent shelter options for those needing to escape domestic violence. Our original shelter apartment wasn’t a place my mom would have taken me to as a child, even though we should have left, I knew we needed to address that. I’m proud of the shelter we are now able provide.”
Lee is also proud of the program’s thrift shop, Classy Seconds. It opened in its new location four years ago. “As a child I wore plenty of clothing from thrift stores, some stores weren’t so nice. We wanted to make the shopping experience as nice as going to a traditional store and I think we’ve done that”.
“I first met Lisa (and her Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, Traci Trenoweth) years ago, while collaborating on enhancing Carson City’s sexual assault support services,” Kitty recounted. “I was BLOWN AWAY by the time, tireless devotion and empathy they poured into every aspect of their lifesaving work with Advocates and I became a passionate fan of them then. Now to see how they have grown blows me away all over again. I’m over the moon to be helping build awareness with this show on Sunday.”
My Soul University Radio Hour is hosted by Kitty McKay and moderated by Ken Farley. The show helps listeners navigate the “tough stuff” in life.
