Gardnerville woman identified in fatal crash at intersection of SR 88 and Mottsville Lane

A Gardnerville woman died Friday in a three vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 88 and Mottsville Lane. A crash earlier in the day also sent three people to the hospital, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Janis Hill, 64, died at the scene of the crash. A 22-year-old Carson City woman, Holly Ducoing, was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries, said NHP Trooper Duncan Dauber. The crash was reported at 6:28 p.m.

Preliminary crash investigation details indicate that a red Ford Taurus driven by Ducoing was traveling southbound on SR88 approaching the intersection with Mottsville Lane. A Blue BMW driven by Hill, was eastbound on Waterloo Lane approaching SR88. The third vehicle was a white Honda SUV driven by Robin Owens, 64, of Minden, which was northbound on SR88 stopped at the intersection with Mottsville Lane.

Crash investigation reveals that the Taurus and BMW entered the intersection at the same time. With its front, the red Taurus struck the left side of the BMW in the intersection. Both vehicles were deflected in a southeast direction where they struck the Honda SUV.

Owens was not injured during the course of the crash. Impairment is unknown at this time. SR88 in this location is a two lane road with one lane in either direction.

Earlier in the day at approximately 1:45 p.m., NHP was dispatched to a two vehicle crash at the same intersection.

Preliminary crash investigation details indicate that a white Chevy Silverado pickup driven by Joshua Rose, 37, of Gardnerville, was traveling southbound on SR88 approaching the intersection with Mottsville Lane. A gray Volkswagen Jetta occupied by Jason Stewart, 46, the driver and Kimberly Chuzas, 48, the right front passenger, of Temecula, Calif., were westbound on Mottsville Lane approaching the intersection with SR88.

One of the vehicles (still under investigation) proceeded into the intersection through the red light. With its front, the Jetta struck the left side of the Chevy pickup. Both vehicles were pushed into the southwest corner of the intersection. The Chevy pickup struck a light pole and power box located in the southwest corner of the intersection. The Volkswagen came to rest in a residential yard located just south of the intersection.

Due to injuries sustained in the crash, Rose and Chuzas were transported to Renown via Care Flight. Stewart was transported to Renown by ambulance. All had non-life threatening injuries and all were wearing seat belts.

Impairment is suspected in the crash and a blood draw from Joshua Rose was obtained.

Trooper Doug Hildebrand of the Nevada Highway Patrol’s Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (MIRT) is investigating both crashes. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information related to this incident is encouraged to reach out to him at (775) 689-4623, (775)434-3062 or by email, dhildebrand@dps.state.nv.us regarding case number NHP-151102594 and case number NHP-151102611.
