Carson City arrests: Man jailed after early morning pursuit in stolen car, meth recovered

A 33-year-old Reno man faces 11 charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, eluding an officer and trafficking a controlled substance after an early Friday morning pursuit that began on the freeway, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Russell Lamont Gatewood was arrested at 3:27 a.m. after crashing a stolen car in the 1900 block of California Street. He also faces misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, obstructing an officer, driving on a revoked license, fictitious registration, hit and run occupied, basic speeding, possession of marijuana and a failure to appear warrant.

According to the arrest report, a deputy was patrolling the area of I-580 and the Fifth Street Bridge when a vehicle passed at an estimated 100 mph. Radar confirmed 99 mph in a posted 65 mph zone. The officer drove after the vehicle and activated his lights near Fairview Drive and Saliman Road.

The vehicle failed to yield and accelerated. The officer activated his siren. The vehicle traveled at approximately 80 mph in a posted 35 mph zone. At Fairview and Idaho the vehicle struck a curb which deflected it across Fairview. The vehicle then went into the parking lot of Lowe’s where it struck an occupied parked vehicle, the arrest report states.

Gatewood began running and the officer followed in his patrol vehicle. While he was running he discard an unknown item, which turned out to be an eyeglass container with 8.9 grams of methamphetamine and a pipe. He ran into an apartment complex in the 1900 block of California Street when he stopped and attempted to hide on a porch and was detained without incident.

Deputies checked the registration of the vehicle and learned it was confirmed stolen from the Reno Police Department. A warrant check showed he had a revoked driver’s license and a misdemeanor warrant through Sparks Municipal Court.

Inside the stolen vehicle deputies located a blue medicine bottle with marijuana in it and on the floorboard a pipe was founded with meth residue. Bail: $60,109.

In other arrests:
— A 21-year-old Carson City man, Jordan Michael Rogers, was arrested Friday, 5:20 a.m. in the 3100 block of Minonee Lane for suspicion of felony interference with a victim reporting a crime and misdemeanor destruction of property.

According to the arrest report, the suspect allegedly took the phone away from a victim during an argument and punched a wall. As the officer spoke, Rogers took the cell phone out of his back pocket and gave it to the officer. The victim wished to press charges. Bail: $5,637.

— A 73-year-old Virginia City man, Alfred Gary Monice, was booked into Carson City jail on a felony aggrevated stalking warrant, issued out of Carson City Justice Court, as well as two misdemeanor warrants for violation of a temporary protection order. Bail: $31,000.

— A 35-year-old transient was arrested Thursday, 10:11 a.m. in the area of Brown Street and Highway 50 East for a misdemeanor violation of a suspended sentence warrant issued through Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $3,000.

— A 28-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Thursday, 8:35 a.m. in the area of Highway 50 East and Airport Road on a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued out of Douglas County. Bail: $250.

Traffic was slow going in Carson City along Highway 50 East following two crashes Tuesday, according to Nevada State Police. There was a crash reported at around 3:50 p.m. on US-50 East and Nye Lane. There was a second crash at 5:18 p.m. reportedly near US-50 and Brown Street.
Injuries are unknown at this time. Motorists can expect delays.
