Carson City School Board to discuss discipline policy, early release days, staff evaluations and more
The next Carson City School District School Board meeting will take place Tuesday Oct. 10 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Robert ‘Bob’ Crowell Board Room within the Carson City Community Center.
Public Comment will be accepted in person, or through virtual participation via email; publiccomment@carson.k12.nv.us no later than 12:30 p.m. the day of the meeting. Email for public comment must include the submitting party’s full name.
The agenda includes:
— Proposed changes to student conduct and discipline policy will be discussed and voted on in its second reading. The first reading of Policy 525 was presented during the Sept. 26 board meeting, which included information regarding suspension and expulsions as well as updates from the 2023 legislative session that includes language relating to restorative justice.
— Similarly, a discussion on proposed changes to Regulation 543 regarding bullying and cyber-bullying will be held. During the 2019 legislative amendments to the NRS, “discrimination based on race” was added and must be updated in school policy as well.
The regulation has also been updated to reflect 2023 legislative amendments, which are as follows:
- The definition of bullying now excludes "expressions, acts or gestures which are engaged in as part of a mutual disagreement or conflict"
- The length of time to complete an investigation has been increased from 2 days to 5 days, with an additional 2 days if extenuating circumstances prevent the completion of the investigation after making a good faith effort
— The annual review of statewide performance evaluation systems for teachers and administrators will be discussed.
The Nevada Educator Performance Framework overview will provide the final ratings summary report for classroom teachers and school administrators for the 2022-2023 school year. Out of the 405 teachers that received the NEPF, 98.3 percent were created effective or better, and all 24 school administrators were rated as effective or better.
— Trustees will discuss benefits of district employees which will renew on Jan. 1, 2024.

o Pre-K – 10:55 a.m.
o Carson High School – 11:40 a.m.
o Pioneer Academy–11:50 a.m.
o Middle Schools – 12:00 p.m.
o Elementary Schools – 12:40 p.m.
— Oct. 14-16 minimum days for elementary parent conferences, students dismiss at 12:40 p.m.
— No school on Friday, Oct. 27 for Nevada Day holiday
