Truck hits overhead sign causing traffic delays on I-580 southbound in Carson City
A commercial vehicle that struck an overhead sign Monday morning on southbound I-580 between US-50 and Fifth Street has caused traffic disruption throughout the day.
Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division responded to the incident at 8:52 a.m. The sign was struck in the southbound lane.
A concerned Carson Now reader alerted us to the traffic flow on the freeway, noting that it has been stop and go traffic for hours on the freeway.
According to an Nevada Department of Transportation spokeswoman Meg Ragonese, the commercial vehicle struck a large overhead sign that noted the Fairview exit one mile ahead. The southbound interstate in the area was briefly closed following the incident for response and equipment staging, she said.
Following the brief initial interstate closure, the southbound interstate has been reduced to one lane as NDOT and contractors removed the damaged sign using a crane, said Ragonese.
The lane closure is currently being removed, and the currently closed lane of southbound I-580 traffic is anticipated to reopen by around 4 p.m., she said.
The sign pole was not damaged, but the large sign was severely damaged and will be replaced over coming months, she said.
Nevada State Police is doing traffic controls, allowing vehicles to go through as Nevada Department of Transportation crews work on the overhead sign.
