Domestic Violence Awareness Month includes purple ribbons in downtown Carson City
With Nevada having the worst murder rate in the nation when it comes to domestic violence against women by men, the state's attorney general said the issue is a top priority for her office.
State and local officials, including Carson City's Advocates to End Domestic Violence, will play a major role in providing public awareness by having a presence this month along Carson Street, including a large banner and a display at the Carson City Library.
The Capital Awareness campaign will involve purple ribbons that will be placed on the fence in front of the Capital grounds for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The purple ribbons will be viewed by everyone traveling Carson Street and send a powerful message that there's no place in homes or the community for domestic violence.
Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said the domestic violence trend in Nevada is disturbing.
“I am sad to report that this year, Nevada ranks No. 1 in the U.S. for women murdered by men,” Masto said. “Last year, Nevada ranked No. 5 according to the Violence Policy Center. We need to address these statistics and improve our system responses to domestic violence victims in order to save lives. This is one of the priorities of my office.”
More than 1,500 purple ribbon pins will be given to several agencies around the state.
The Attorney General’s Office will be involved in many events during October in an effort to draw attention to the reality of violence in the home and the work that is being done to end violence against women in Nevada. Domestic violence programs, law enforcement agencies, prosecution offices, and task forces throughout the state are planning a number of activities commemorating Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
