WNC’s Veterans Resource Center topic of discussion for Carson City Rotarians
More than 150 military veterans attend Western Nevada College (WNC) each year. The school hopes to increase that number and is making big investments in its Veterans Resource Center to help those veterans who want to return to or further their education.
Veterans Resource Coordinator John Jacobson will give members of the Rotary Club of Carson City an overview of the available programs and services at the club’s next meeting on Tuesday, September 26th. The public is invited to attend the luncheon that takes place at noon in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom.
“It’s my job to connect our veterans and their families with the many resources and programs we offer,” Jacobson explains. “Many veterans benefits go unused due to lack of knowledge. Some think their benefits only apply to a traditional bachelor degree programs, when in reality their GI bill will pay tuition for other degrees and training programs, as well as help with books, housing, and other necessities while in school.”
WNC provides resources to facilitate success such as Disability Support Services, Academic Coaching, Financial Aid, tutoring and mentoring support.
Jacobson says these services help alleviate some of the unique stresses veterans face when returning to school. “Many of them have been out of school from anywhere from 4 to 20 plus years and have no idea what returning to the classroom will be like. Some of the biggest obstacles veterans face when they return to school are navigating veteran benefits, balancing academic obligations with other parts of life and learning to apply the skills they learned during their military service in an academic setting. We offer the support and resources to ensure their success no matter the obstacles they face.”
