Carson City Sheriff's arrest log: Man booked on felony burglary of car wash equipment
A 26 year-old Carson City man was taken into custody Friday afternoon at 2:38 p.m. in the 10 block of Edizi Circle for felony possession of stolen property and misdemeanor obtaining money under false pretenses, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.
According to the arrest report, Paul James Vigil was arrested at his residence following a three-day investigation of multiple burglaries at a local car wash.
A Sheriff's deputy originally responded to a Sept. 19 report of stolen tools, including an electric jackhammer, wielder and skill saw, the report said. Total value of the stolen items, most notably a $1,200 jackhammer, was reported to be estimated at more than $2,000.
Three days later, the deputy a new burglary report was filed from the same car wash business on Sept. 22, the report said.
An online search of recently pawned items showed a jackhammer had been sold by Vigil to a local pawn business, the report said.
The deputy contact the pawn shop manager, who showed the jackhammer item that Vigil had sold him. The item matched the description given to him by the reporting party (RP), a car wash employee, the report said.
The RP subsequently met the deputy at the pawn store and positively identified the jackhammer as belonging to the car wash business, the report said.
Law enforcement made contact with Vigil Friday afternoon at the Edizi Circle residence, where the suspect denied having stolen the jackhammer, the report said.
Vigil instead told the Sheriff's deputy that he had purchased the tool for $60 from a thirty-something black male riding a bicycle and pulling a trailer, the report said.
However, this story did not match the one he gave to the pawn shop staff, which reported to law enforcement that Vigil said he'd obtained the tool from a family member in California.
The suspect explained to law enforcement that he gave staff this story because it sounded less suspicious, the report said.
A records check on Vigil confirmed an active misdemeanor bench warrant for contempt of court and failure to appear issued out of the Carson City Justice Court, the report said.
Vigil was handcuffed on the warrant as well as for possession of stolen property and obtaining money under false pretenses. He was then transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $25,000.
