Red Cross of Northern Nevada offers smoke alarms at no cost to those in need
The Red Cross of Northern Nevada reminds all residents that September is National Preparedness Month, a time to prepare for any potential disasters, learn lifesaving skills and practical safety tips to reduce injury and death in your home and community.
One of the easiest ways to prepare is to make sure that your home has a working smoke alarm. Through its Home Fire Campaign, the Red Cross offers free smoke alarms and installation to all northern Nevada residents. This is a free service and there is no obligation. During the installation visit, Red Cross volunteers will also customize evacuation plans and share education information.
To request a free smoke alarm installation, contact the Red Cross of Northern Nevada at 775-954-1185. Pease leave name, address, zip code and phone number. Callers to the hotline will receive a return call within 48 hours.
The smoke alarm giveaway is part of the Home Fire Campaign, launched by the Red Cross in 2014, with the goal of reducing the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent. According to the Red Cross, on a national level every day seven people are killed, and another 36 people suffer injuries because of home fires. Most of these deaths occur in homes that lack working smoke alarms.
Did you know that:
— More than $7 billion in property damage occurs every year due to home fires
— Smoke alarms cut the risk of death from fire in half
— Three of every five home fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms
Compared to their share of the population, older adults are more likely to die in home fires than in other age groups.
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries
