Winnemucca Community Garden Team Selected to Represent Nevada as USA Delegates to 2010 Worldwide Terra Madre Food Conference in Italy
Four representatives from The Winnemucca Community Garden (WCG) will be the only delegates from the state of Nevada to represent the United States when 5,000 representatives from the worldwide Terra Madre network meet in Turin, Italy this October. This event, in its fourth year, coincides with the international Slow Food Fair. The five day meeting will bring together food communities, cooks, academics, youth and musicians from all over the world; united in their promotion of sustainable local food production, and preserving the knowledge and culture of food production handed down through generations.
Those chosen from Winnemucca are Donna Kiker, a WCG Board Member, and three VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America), Katherine Griffin, Louisa Guest and Kathleen Moran. The team was chosen because of the unique challenges we experience with a short growing season, limited water and rural location. These are challenges that many people of the world must overcome in order to provide access to local food sources.
The Winnemucca delegates will have the opportunity to connect with members of the global community. The team hopes to gain knowledge that can help improve food security in Winnemucca, by increasing access to fresh, sustainable food sources for our community. “We especially hope to exchange ideas with others who are facing the challenges of similar remote locations or high desert climates in other areas of the world.” explains Katherine Griffin, a member of the Slow Food chapter located in her hometown of St. Louis. “This is an opportunity to learn and grow, in order to strengthen our programs and our local community, as well as to help others do the same.” She added.
The honor of being selected as delegates includes housing, transportation and meals at the event, which amounts to an in-kind donation of approximately $12,000.00. The team members are responsible for the cost of their airfare to Italy. Over the next two and a half months the team will conduct fundraising to help off-set the cost of airfare, which is expected to be a total of approximately $6000.00. VISTA volunteers subsist on a monthly stipend of approximately $800.00 per month and do not have discretionary funds for travel. To support the team’s efforts contact the Community Garden office at 775-623-2333, or send a check to the garden office (640 Melarkey Street, Winnemucca NV 89445) to make a contribution. The Winnemucca Community Garden is a non-profit organization, and donations are tax deductable.
