Dense smoke advisory continues for Carson region, fire weather watch in effect Monday
With gusty winds and low humidity in the forecast throughout the Carson City region, the National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch in effect Monday and has extended its dense smoke advisory.
The areas affected in the fire weather watch zone include the Northern Sierra Front including Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, Storey and Washoe counties, as well as western Lassen, Eastern Plumas and Eastern Sierra counties.
Winds will be out of the southwest, 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. Higher gusts of up to 35 mph are possible for wind prone locations as well as for the Sierra ridges from Lassen County down through Mono County.
Humidity will be between 10 to 15 percent with poor recoveries during the overnight hours. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The weather service advises people to avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions.
Meanwhile, the Dense Smoke Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Monday based on smoke model guidance and current fire activity. Unhealthy air quality and reduced visibility are expected to continue.
Light west-southwest winds will continue to push smoke into the region from several wildfires burning across California. The near-surface smoke concentration may improve during the afternoon today and tomorrow but looks to degrade during the evening and overnight hours through Monday morning.
The advisory is for the greater Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley areas, as well as the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Western Nevada Basin and Range including Pyramid Lake and Northern Washoe County.
For updates, see airnow.gov or fire.airnow.gov for the latest air quality information.
Due to the poor air quality, people are advised to stay indoors as much as possible when smoke is present. Avoid strenuous activity, especially if you are sensitive to poor air quality, such as the elderly, children and anyone with chronic illness or respiratory problems. Consider postponing outdoor activities.
