Carson City Sheriff's Office explains Nevada's right of way laws
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office would like to take a moment to provide our community with a few tips regarding right of way laws within Nevada. Carson City is a growing community within northern Nevada with a vast network of roads. To help keep traffic flowing safely and smooth, we ask our community members to remember the rules of the road.
One of the most important ways to keep people safe on our roadways, is, understanding who has the right of way. The right of way means who gets to go first. When two vehicles are in the same place at once, the right of way laws under 484B of the Nevada Revised Statutes decides who goes first and who waits their turn.
When we all know the rules and follow them, we can avoid accidents which cause serious injuries. Here are some basic rules regarding the right of ways in Nevada.
Follow the traffic control signs. If the posted traffic control sign says stop, then please stop your motor vehicle. If the traffic control sign says yield to oncoming traffic, the traffic coming in the other direction has the right of way, and you must wait for them before you proceed into the intersection.
If two vehicles arrive at an uncontrolled intersection at the same time, the car on the right goes first and the vehicle on the left must yield the right of way.
When turning left, with or without a flashing yellow arrow, you must yield to vehicles that are coming from the other direction until you can make the turn safely.
All motorists must stop for emergency vehicles. Nevada motorists must stop on the right side of the road in a parallel position to the roadway.
Drivers must yield anytime there’s a vehicle already in the intersection or close enough to the intersection that you would create a hazard if you tried to proceed into the intersection without waiting.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office would like to remind all Nevada motorists to please be patient and mindful of other motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians on our Nevada roadways.
Law enforcement personnel will continue to enforce traffic safety laws year-round as part of their commitment to reduce accidents and save lives. Whether you're the driver, a passenger or pedestrian, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to make safety on our roadways their top priority.
