Carson City arrests: Man waving knife around jailed on fugitive from justice, false ID charges

A 41-year-old transient was arrested Monday for felony suspicion of providing false identification to avoid prosecution and being a fugitive from justice, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Timothy Eric Scanlon was arrested at 7:39 p.m. in the 4100 block of South Carson Street. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of obstructing. According to the arrest report, deputies were called to the location regarding a shirtless man who was stopping cars and waving a meat cleaver type of knife around.

A deputy arrived and saw the suspect put a large knife back into its sheath and then set it down next to a light pole. The officer told the man to stand up toward the patrol car and away from the knife. The suspect asked why. The officer again told him to come to the front of the patrol vehicle. The suspect walked past the front bumper and attempted to walk away. The deputy told him to stop and put his hands on the hood of the vehicle. The man complied.

When the deputy attempted to detain him with handcuffs, the man spun around toward the officer and pushed him away and began running toward the parking lot of a convenience store, the arrest report states.

Deputies commanded him to stop but he continued to flee. The deputy caught up with the man who was shirtless, sweaty and was able to pull away, the report states. He was struck once with a baton by a sergeant and told to stop resisting. The man again turned and attempted to run. The officer tackled him and attempted to gain control of the man’s arms, giving orders for him to stop resisting.

The man continued to pull away and resisted and was stuck twice with a baton. He continued to fight, ultimately restrained, cuffed and put into a patrol vehicle.

The officer asked the suspect for his name. The man gave a name that was not his. The sergeant recognized the man as a subject to be on the look out for, described in a bulletin regarding a stolen vehicle case out of Utah.

Officers were able to determine that Scanlon was the suspect in the stolen vehicle case through pictures and matching tattoos. Dispatch also advised the man had a confirmed felony fugitive from justice warrant issued out of Arkansas, the arrest report states.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for medical clearance prior to going to jail. As officers arrived at the hospital they learned the backpack with the man’s ID was located and inside it had a picture that matched information on the Arkansas warrant, the report states.

The man was treated at the hospital for injuries and then taken to jail where he was booked for the no-bail felony fugitive from justice warrant. He was also booked for felony suspicion, providing false identification and misdemeanor obstructing that carries bail amounts of $10,412.
