Carson City School District announces new principals and administrators

First-day jitters are not just for students. The Carson City School District was pleased to announce the appointment of seven new principals and district administrators (alphabetically by school) for the 2020-2021 school year at its school board meeting Tuesday evening.

— Robert (Bob) Chambers as principal for Carson High School

— Cody Farnworth, Ed.D, as vice principal for Carson High School

— Susan Moulden-Horton, Ed.D., as vice principal for Carson High School

— Susan Desrosiers as dean of students for Carson Middle School

— Steven Nelms as dean of students for Carson Middle School

— Amy Robinson as vice principal for Eagle Valley Middle School

— Gina Hoppe as vice principal for Fritsch Elementary School

Also recognized at the meeting was Mr. Nathan Brigham who was previously hired as the vice principal at Empire Elementary School back in April of 2020. Click here for his full announcement.

"We welcome all these qualified individuals in their new roles,” said Mr. Richard Stokes, CCSD superintendent. “They each will provide valuable and dynamic support to the administrative teams at their respective schools. These positions help administer the operational programs of each school, and I look forward to working alongside some of Carson City’s finest educators as they become familiar with their new assignments.”

In their positions, these administrators will be part of an educational system focused on developing the skill and talents for all students through rigorous learning experiences, supportive relationships and relevant real-life applications. They will be visible instructional leaders throughout the district and propel student achievement in the areas of curriculum, instruction, assessment, accountability and staff supervision.

Prior to his appointment as principal of at Carson High School, Mr. Chambers, has served within the Carson City School District for more than 20 years. Most recently, he served as the vice principal (2014-2020) and dean of students also at Carson High (2011-2014). Prior, he was vice principal at Empire Elementary School (2008-2011) and an English teacher at Carson High (1999-2008). He also taught high school English at Valier Public School System in Valier, Mont. (1998-1999). He earned a Bachelor’s in Secondary Education from the University of Montana Western, Dillon, Mont. in 1998 and later earned a Master’s in Educational Administration from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. in 2008.

Dr. Moulden, the new vice principal at Carson High School, has previously served as the vice principal, dean of students, test coordinator and athletic director at Eagle Valley Middle School (2013-2020). She also simultaneously served as an adjunct professor for Grand Canyon University (2012-2020). Prior, she served as the School Improvement Grant (SIG) coordinator (2010-2013) and as an Education Program Professional – Title I (2007-2010) for the Nevada Department of Education. She also served as an adjunct faculty for the Masters of Arts in Teaching Program at Sierra Nevada College (2010-2014), principal with Storey County School district (2002-2006), Physical Education teacher at Eagle Valley Middle School (1999-2002), district-wide elementary Summer School principal for the Carson City School District (1997-2000), vice principal inter for Seeliger Elementary (1996-1997) and Physical Education teacher at Mark Twain Elementary School (1994-1999). Dr. Moulden earned a Bachelor’s in Physical Education from Calif. State University, Chico in 1981 and later earned a Master’s in physical Education with an emphasis in Sports Medicine from Indiana University in 1982. She earned her teaching credential from Calif. State University, San Bernardino, in 1990; her degree in Educational Administration from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1999; and her Education Doctorate in Executive Leadership from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in 2009. She also earned Principal of the Year for Storey County School District in both 2003 and 2004 and was a Red Apple Award recipient, 2002.

Prior to his appointment as vice principal for Carson High School, Dr. Farnworth served as the vice principal (2015-2020) at Fritsch Elementary School. He was also a Science teacher and Science Implementation Specialist (2014-2015) at Carson High. He served as dean of students (teacher on special assignment) for Carson high (2013-2014) after teaching science and serving as the head baseball coach for Carson High (2008-2013). He taught Science, Physical Education and served as an assistant coach for varsity as well as the offensive coordinator for junior varsity football at Pueblo West High School in Pueblo, Colo. Prior to his stints at Carson and Pueblo West, he taught Science and Physical Education and coached a variety of sports (1997-2001) at Dayton High School for the Lyon County School District. Dr. Farnworth earned a Bachelor’s in Education, graduating from Mesa State College in 1996. He later earned a Master’s in Administration and Supervision from the University of Phoenix in 2001 before earning his Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2019

Mrs. Desrosiers, the new dean of students for Carson Middle School, previously served as the administrative designee and district substitute administrator (2016-2020) for Douglas County School District. She also taught kindergarten, first, second, third, seventh and eighth grade for Douglas County School District from (2008-2020). From 2004-2008, Mrs. Desrosiers served as a proprietor for the Keys Café in So. Lake Tahoe where she managed all the operations of the restaurant and catering company. She began her teaching career with the Carson City School District where she taught first and second grade (2001-2004) for Fremont and Bordewich Bray Elementary Schools. She earned a Bachelor’s in Humanities in 2000 and a post baccalaureate teaching credential (2002) before earning a Master’s in Teaching and Master’s in Administration (2016) from Sierra Nevada College. She also graduated Magna Cum Laude and was recognized as Teacher of the Year for 2011 and 2018 for Douglas County School District.

Prior to his appointment as dean of students for Carson Middle School, Mr. Nelms, served as the safety committee lead facilitator and director (2017-2018) as well as an administrative intern and subbing (2017-2020) and Physical Education teacher (2016-2020) at Carson Middle. Most has also served as the varsity track head coach (2016-2020) and varsity football assistant coach (2016-2020) for Carson High School. Mr. Nelms also taught Physical Education at Southside Elementary (2014-2015) in Spring Creek, Nev. and completed his student teaching at Sage Elementary and Spring Creek High School (2014) in Elko, Nev. He earned a Bachelor’s in Physical Education with an emphasis in Exercise Science from the University of Jamestown (2015) in Jamestown, N.D. and his Masters in Educational Administration (2018) from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz.

Ms. Robinson, the new vice principal at Eagle Valley Middle School, has served within the Carson City School district for nearly 25 years. Most recently, she was the dean of students (2018-2020) and administrative intern – acting as dean of students (Oct. 2015 – June 2016 and Aug. 2017 – June 2018) at Carson Middle School. She also taught sixth grade Science (2006-2015) and sixth grade Math (2003-2006) at Carson Middle. She was a second grade team teacher (2002-2003), Math Facilitator (2001-2002), fourth grade teacher (1999-2001) and first grade team teacher (1996-1999) at Empire Elementary School. She began her teaching career as a remedial Reading teacher at Bordewich-Bray Elementary (Jan. – June 1996). Ms. Robinson earned her Bachelor’s in Pre-Medicine (1993) and her Master’s in Elementary Education (1997) from the University of Nevada, Reno. She also earned a Master’s in Administration from Sierra Nevada College in 2017.

Prior to her appointment as vice principal at Fritsch Elementary School, Ms. Hoppe served as a second, third, fourth, and fifth-grade teacher (2008-2020) at Empire and Fritsch Elementary Schools in Carson City. She earned a Bachelor’s (2003) and her teaching credentials (2007) from San Diego State University in San Diego, Calif. before earning her Master’s in Educational Leadership from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2019 through the Nevada Leads Program. Ms. Hoppe was also named Teacher of the Year at Fritsch Elementary School in 2019 and received the “Light of Education” award in 2015. She is also GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) and TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) endorsed.

Carson City Historical Society hosts local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff, who will present a Chautauqua on "Snowshoe Thompson: Superhero of the Sierra" from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11 in the Carriage House behind the Foreman-Roberts Historic House located at 1207 Carson Street, Carson City, during Mark Twain Days.

On the morning of Saturday, May 11, volunteers will fan out across the Truckee River watershed to collect and test water samples from creeks, streams, smaller lakes, and Lake Tahoe itself to take a “snapshot” of water quality at a single moment in time for this important source of drinking water and outdoor recreation.

The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners will hold a special meeting May 20 that will include the final adoption of the County Budget Fiscal Year 2024-25.

A 44-year-old man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of unlawful occupancy of real property and violation of a suspended sentence, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report. The man was occupying the home of a deceased person without permission.

The Nevada Artists Association Art Gallery in Carson City presents the "Just the Right Size" show with 130 entries by 31 local Nevada artists.

UPDATE 3:11 PM: The fire in the 1400 block of Monte Rosa Drive was contained to the garage and was knocked down quickly, according to CCFD Battalion Chief Jon Pedrini. The fire did not extend to the main structure. No one was home and there were no injuries. The cause is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called late Monday morning to a structure fire in the 1400 block of Monte Rosa Drive.

For years, advocates have called upon presidential administrations to reclassify marijuana or deschedule it entirely from the DEA’s list of controlled substances.

You will find something of interest or my name’s not Mark Twain, or used to be anyways. And this year Virginia City is joining in on the fun along with Carson City. Wow!

Nevada Division of Forestry state nursery is open for business beginning Thursday, May 9. When we first bought our home in 1988 with its 2.5 acres, there were some poplars, pines, blue spruce, willows, and grass, but little else. I soon discovered the state nursery and filled the yard with flowering shrubs and other plants. I added lilacs, sand cherries, golden and Nevada currants, sumacs, Apache plumes, and incense cedars.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested a Dayton man Saturday for possession of child pornography. During the investigation, officers also learned the man was a local little league coach.

Mrs. Carson City America, Kassandra Tapia, is set to grace the stage of the Mrs. Nevada America Pageant, scheduled to take place on June 9, 2024, in Las Vegas. As part of Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday celebration, the Smokey Reading Challenge is underway. Launched this morning at the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records in Carson City, the program is designed to engage children across Nevada in an exciting reading journey to learn about wildfire prevention, forests, and careers in natural resources with Smokey Bear.

The Nevada Jeep Club held their first Washoe Valley Cleanup on Saturday, May 4 and collected more than 450 pounds of trash along Highway 395.

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club members continue celebrating the organization’s 127th year with a presentation on the upcoming Jazz and Beyond festival.

At the club’s dinner meeting on Thursday, May 16, Cherie Shipley, a member of the event planning committee, will talk about the annual Jazz and Beyond festival, how it formed, and the impact it has had on the community. Jazz and Beyond is scheduled for August 16 to August 25, 2024.
