Carson City area weekend weather: Warmer with potential for wildfire smoke to return
Enjoy the blue skies around the Carson City region Thursday and Friday as the wind pattern is expected to change as we head into the weekend, with the possibility of wildfire smoke returning, according to the National Weather Service.
Northeast to east winds Thursday into most of Friday will help push much of the smoke from the nearby major wildfires west of the Sierra crest. While hazy skies probable, overall the air should be a lot cleaner than it has been in a while, according to the weather service.
The latest wind and smoke models from the weather service, however, shows smoke returning to areas east of the Sierra crest and into far western Nevada starting mid to late Friday afternoon.
This is due to a shift in the winds back to a more west, southwesterly direction, specifically Susanville, Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Reno, Carson City and Minden are likely to see smoke due to this wind shift.
West to southwest winds are projected to continue through the weekend, therefore smoke and haze should be expected across the region, assuming the California fires remain active. Predicting which area will see the thickest smoke this weekend is too soon to call, forecasters say. See fire.airnow.gov for the latest smoke and air quality conditions.
Winds on Saturday will turn breezy, with gusts to 30-35 mph in many areas. This could create impacts to lake recreation along with increasing fire danger, according to the weather service.
Temperatures around western Nevada valleys into the weekend will range from the mid 80s Friday, low 80s Saturday and high 80s on Sunday. Temperatures will be cooler in the Lake Tahoe Basin, with a highs in the low 70s Friday, high 60s Saturday and low 70s Sunday.
