Carson City man arrested for kidnapping, eluding, and drug crimes after attempting to drive away with deputy in car
A 30-year-old Carson City man, Stephen Barns, was arrested in the 4000 block of S. Curry Tuesday evening for felony kidnapping, eluding with endangerment, obstruction, and possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia.
According to the report, deputies were dispatched to a local movie theater on report of a suspicious vehicle.
The reporting party said there was a man sitting in his car, which was running, for an “unspecified amount of time.”
Just before 5 p.m., deputies arrived on scene and located the vehicle, which contained Barns, who deputies knew from previous interactions.
Barns was sleeping in the vehicle, “slumped at an angle in his seat.” When deputies woke him up, he seemed “dazed,” according to the report.
Barns had a “smoking device” between his legs which deputies inferred as being used to smoke methamphetamine.
Deputies told Barns to step out of the vehicle, which Barns did not respond to.
A deputy opened the driver’s side door to usher Barns out while reaching for the smoking device so that Barns could not destroy it. When he did so, Barns began reaching for “other objects” with his right hand.
The deputy reached to stop his right hand, at which point Barns jerked his hand away, changed gears and placed the vehicle into drive and began driving away with the deputy still inside.
The deputy released the wheel and exited the vehicle.
Barns continued northbound on Curry Street. A chase began, during which other deputies located Barns at a gas station on S. Carson Street, but he continued to elude arrest.
Deputies ultimately stopped Barns near the intersection of South Carson St. and Colorado St. where he was placed into custody.
Inside the vehicle, deputies located a black fanny pack which contained drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine.
Barns was taken into custody without further incident.
Bail: $54,049
