Carson City sheriff, district attorney release Marsy’s Law information video
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong and District Attorney Jason Woodbury have released a public service announcement designed to educate the public about Marsy’s Law.
The two minute video is available at www.carson.org/marsyslaw, as well as the Sheriff and D.A.’s websites and social media pages. The video features both English and Spanish subtitles.
Marsy’s Law codifies the rights of victims in criminal justice proceedings, including the right to information about the offender’s custody status, notification of critical court proceedings, and restitution. Nevada voters adopted the measure by a margin of 61 to 39 percent in the 2018 election.
Furlong said, “It’s important to educate the community about the rights they have if they are ever the victim of a crime. Victims must have a voice in their case, and part of law enforcement’s job is making sure that voice is heard.” Woodbury agreed, adding, “Victims don’t stop being victims after an arrest is made. Their rights need to be respected through all phases of the criminal justice process.”
Marsy’s Law requires that information about victims’ rights must “be made available to the general public” which prompted Furlong and Woodbury to produce the informational video.
