Carson and Stewart Street Roundabout in final, 90 percent design phase
The hotly debated proposed Stewart Street and Carson Street roundabout is in its final design phase according to Carson City via its website Carson Proud, and was presented to the the Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee, which helped fund the project, during a meeting held Monday.
"This is a major milestone for the project team and one more step toward the start of the construction stage scheduled to begin (by) the end of the year," said the website.
Now in its 90 percent phase, the full design could be finished as early as October, after the project is brought before the Regional Transportation Commission and the Board of Supervisors.
City Engineer Dan Stucky presented the project to the Redevelopment Committee Monday, which included last touches such as underground utilities, landscaping, lighting, and more.
The roundabout has been a topic of discussion since it was first suggested, and will be the first two-lane roundabout in the capitol city, which will include a detached pathway for pedestrians and cyclists. A one-lane roundabout is installed at 5th street and Fairview.
The project will be brought before the Regional Transportation Commission on Aug. 14, and the Board of Supervisor's meeting on Aug. 15. Sometime at the end of the year, they are also planning to hold another meeting for the public before construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2020, according to Carson Proud.
"The roundabout installment will reduce the frequency and severity of accidents, minimize long-term maintenance and operation costs, and improve traffic flow, which are motivating factors for its design," said the website.
