Thunderstorms, flash flooding possible Sunday throughout western Nevada
The potential for heavy rain from developing thunderstorms in western Nevada including Carson City has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a flash flood watch through Sunday night.
The watch is effective now through 10 p.m. and includes the greater Reno, Carson City and Carson Valley areas, Dayton, Silver Springs and southern Lyon County, north Washoe County and the Western Nevada Basin.
Low pressure over northern California combined with widespread moisture will lead to thunderstorm development this afternoon and evening. As of early Sunday afternoon, showers and thunderstorms were seen beginning to develop over the Sierra and into western Nevada.
These initial cells will be weaker variety storms capable of producing moderate rain and gusts around 30 mph. However, by early afternoon, the strength of storms will increase, according to the weather service.
Threats during the afternoon hours include very heavy rain resulting in flash flooding, strong gusty winds, hail, and lightning.
Storms will be capable of producing very heavy rainfall with the potential for flash flooding and debris flows, according to the weather service.
Those in the watch area should continue to be aware of the possibility for heavy rainfall, avoid low lying areas, and be careful when approaching highway dips and underpasses. The weather service advises not to drive vehicles into areas where water covers the road. The road may be washed out or the water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely.
