Construction begins on new JAC station in East Carson City
Heavy equipment has begun clearing space on the old animal shelter property at 3770 Butti Way to make way for a new bus terminal, said Carson City Planning Division Assistant Planner Kathe Green.
"Carson City is moving the Jump Around Carson bus system and dispatch to this location," she said.
Current Jump Around Carson (JAC) headquarters is nearby, neighboring Carson City Public Works to the west of the former animal shelter property and on the south side of Butti Way.
Carson City Transit Coordinator Graham Dollarhide told the Carson City Planning Commission in May that the proposed new site for JAC would reduce traffic congestion at the main entrance to the public works corporate yard, where JAC buses are currently housed, and improve cost-effectiveness long-term for the city.
"The short-range and long-range benefit to the people of Carson City is that operations of city functions ... will be allowed to be more efficient," Dollarhide wrote in a proposal submitted May 24. "It will allow for increased efficiency at the corporate yard, which provides constant and consistent service to the public. Any benefit to city operations is a benefit to the taxpayers of the city."
The old animal shelter, which has been vacant for the past 10 months since the new Carson City Animal Shelter opened last October on Airport Road, is situated at the corner of Butti Way and Fairview Drive, location that is much easier to access for buses and the public, Dollarhide said.
"By moving the JAC facility to the old animal shelter site, the public would have easier access to JAC personnel," he told the Planning Commission. "And there would be less traffic conflicts from the main entrance of the city's corporate yard."
The 5.25-acre former animal shelter site, currently zoned public regional, contains an 1,800 square-foot building and backs to a residential neighborhood.
Dollarhide wrote in the proposal to the Planning Commission that the new JAC site would not contribute to more noise or congestion in the area, either.
"This project will have very little, if any, impact on pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the area," he wrote. "No additional walkways or traffic volume will result. The operations of this project already exist on the same road ... and once relocated, the activities will continue to function as they currently do."
The Planning Commission approved a Special Use Permit (SUP) in May, allowing for the proposed bus terminal and dispatch center.
Dollarhide said Friday that the city has budgeted around $330,000 to cover construction costs of the new JAC bus terminal and dispatch center.
While there is no firm completion date for the project, Dollarhide said the department is planning for a move-in date later this fall.
"We are hopeful that everything will be done and we will be moved in by November," he said.
