Carson City sheriff’s log: Man jailed after threatening deputy with whiskey bottle

A 43-year old Carson City man was arrested Monday for felony assault with a deadly weapon and four misdemeanor charges after allegedly threatening to attack an officer with a large bottle of Jack Daniel’s whiskey, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Donald James Wilk was taken into custody in the 1000 block of Siskiyou Drive at 5:34 p.m. According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to the residence on a domestic violence call. Dispatch advised Wilk was intoxicated and acting violent and had left the residence.

Deputies met with the victim who said Wilk was drunk and battered her. The woman said she was afraid the man would come back and hurt her and her two children who were inside the home. The victim told officers the man went into the garage of the home where he punched out the glass of the back door and had cut his arm in the process.

Officers were able to get a description of the man and advised dispatch that there was enough evidence to arrest him on a battery charge. Dispatch was also advised that Wilk was bleeding due to the amount of blood found at the scene. A deputy began to follow the blood trail to a residence on Siskiyou Drive and located the man hiding behind an air conditioner.

The deputy walked toward him and asked Wilk, for officer safety reasons, to show his hands. Wilk didn’t answer. The officer asked again for Wilk to show his hands. Wilk then quickly jumped up from behind the air conditioner fixture and was holding a large Jack Daniel’s bottle. At the same time he was screaming and yelling “you want me to show you my f***ing hands,” he brought the bottle up to where the officer believed he was going to be hit with it, the arrest report states.

The officer observed the man was covered in blood, was in a drunken rage and had “a crazy and angry facial expression.” The man advanced toward the officer with the bottle and the officer prepared to draw his gun. The officer order the man to drop the bottle but he had refused. A second officer arrived on scene, with the first officer in the middle of the confrontation advising him to taser the man. A taser was deployed but it had no effect. Wilk was still standing, cursing and being belligerent, the arrest report states.

The man then looked at the officer who tasered him and challenged both officers to a fight, the arrest report states. A second taser was discharged. The man continued to resist, fight and get back on his feet. A sergeant arrived on scene along with other deputies and the man was handcuffed. Wilks clothing was covered in blood and his right forearm was lacerated from having punched the window earlier. Carson City Fire Department was called to the scene and treated the man, removing taser prongs and then bandaged his forearm. Deputies collected the Jack Daniel’s whiskey bottle and taser prongs and booked them into evidence.

The man was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries. While in transit, he was very angry and verbally abusive to the arresting deputy, calling him names and challenging him to a fight, the arrest report states.

After he was treated he was taken to jail where a criminal history was run through dispatch. It was discovered that he is an ex-felon with at least three prior felony convictions from another state and had not yet registered in Carson City. He was booked on charges of assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon, obstructing and delaying, resisting arrest with violence, domestic battery and being an ex-felon failing to register. Bail: $24,928.

In other arrests: An 18-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Sunday, 5:29 p.m. in the 200 block of West Applegate Drive on misdemeanor charges of DUI, driving while using a cell phone, driving without a valid driver’s license.

According to the arrest report, a deputy observed the woman driving and using her cell phone and made a traffic stop. The woman told the officer she didn’t have a valid driver’s license, only an instruction permit which had expired. The woman had red eyes and emitted a strong odor of alcohol as she spoke. She denied having anything to drink and said she was 18 and will turn 19 soon. She agreed to submit to standardized field sobriety tests. She admitted she had been drinking tequila prior to driving her vehicle. She did not perform the sobriety tests as explained and a preliminary breath test showed she was over .08. She was arrested. Bail: $1,441.

— A 37-year-old Reno man was arrested Sunday, 9:21 p.m. in the 2000 block of Harvest Drive on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery. According to the arrest report, officers responded to a residence in reference to a child custody dispute and met with the victim who was crying and upset.

She advised she had an altercation with her husband. She said they were in town from Reno and had gone to Lake Tahoe for the day with their friend and their children. After a day at the lake they returned to the Harvest Drive home to hang out. She said both had a few drinks.

While at the residence the victim and the man had a dispute about their marriage. The woman told her husband she was going to leave and take their son home. This caused the man to become upset. He blocked the entry to the home and refused to let the woman get their 18-month old son. The situation escalated and the baby was inside crying. The woman said she threw a water bottle at the man, hitting him in the side of the head.

The man grabbed the woman’s right arm, tilted it behind her back, threw her to the ground, and pinned her. The woman didn’t have marks on her arm but had skinned knees from the take down, the arrest report states.
The woman said her father was on his way to get her and she did not want to pursue charges against the man. She eventually wrote a statement.

Deputies met with the suspect who appeared intoxicated and was emotional, crying through the interview. He said he argued with the woman about marital problems and it became heated. He told deputies he was concerned the woman was going to take their son away and leave him and so he blocked her from leaving.

He confirmed the woman threw a water bottle at him and confirmed he grabbed her by the arm and took her to the ground. He said he wasn’t trying to hurt his wife, he just wanted to prevent her from leaving with their son. He was placed in custody. His wife told officer she never wanted this to happen and requested to speak with him to make arrangements for bail. The man was remorseful and apologetic about what took place, the arrest report states. Bail: $3,137.
