What Works: Creating a Home in Your Business
Today, as I was doing a yoga class at Carson City Yoga, my thoughts drifted to the concept of “home.” There are dozens of clichés about home. Home is where the heart is. Home is where you make it. But how does one actively create a home?
This concept of home is so important. Yet, for so long, I felt homeless. It wasn’t because I didn’t have a roof over my head. It was because I lacked the grounding, safety, and feeling of belonging that comes from embracing a home.
Not feeling “at home” or “comfortable” isn’t just a trigger point for moving. It’s a catalyst in business for turnover. As a leader, how can you actively create a home?
What is “world class” about your home?
There is something your home does for you that enhances you in a way no other home could. When you find what your home does best and bring alignment between that home and those who live there (yourself, employees) you bring purpose to the organization.
Carson City is my “world class” home because it has so much heart. It’s a real community where people lift each other up. My home is 30 minutes from my favorite beach, Round Hill Pines Beach Resort, a place where people from all over the world come to enjoy beautiful Lake Tahoe. Ask yourself (or your employees) this question. What makes this home (or your company) really shine? Then, commit to being grateful for it and enhance the experience around your home.
Who do you allow in your home?
The closer one is to home, the closer one is to the heart. If home is where the heart is, assuring only people who are committed to the mission, vision, and values of that home is essential. We are now taking this out of the city view and down in between your four walls. Knowing the values of your home is essential to “making a home.” Who are your friends? Who are your employees? Who are your partners? What suppliers do you do business with? Being intentional about aligning values and relationships helps keep your home harmonious.
Do you try to run away from home?
One of the biggest indicators that you are not focusing on your home’s strength (what is “world class”) and your values (who you allow in your home) is you try to run away from home. This is where turnover happens in companies or people just give up. Reasons for turnover are much deeper than what this article will cover. However, the root of running away from home is that home doesn’t feel secure. It doesn’t feel safe. Because of this, there are communication breakdowns at home. Relationships are rocky. Home just doesn’t feel as good as it used to when you started your job, moved in. Gaps form between ideals and reality. Those gaps are too much to deal with. So, you try to run away.
To quote another cliché, the grass becomes greener on the other side.
Do you feel “at home” where you are? If you are a leader (and you are*) are you courageous enough to ask yourself why you feel at home, or why you don’t? Asking questions is the key to discovery, gap analysis, and closing those gaps to create real change.
Are you ready to feel at home? The floor is yours, Carson City.
Author’s Note: When I say “leader” in my columns, know that you lead yourself every day. Even if you aren’t a leader in an organization, you are the leader in the way you organize your thoughts, your activities, your family, and your life.
Now go lead!
