Power restored after Carson City storm burst knocks tree into transformer
The power is back on, traffic lights are now working and cleanup continues tonight after a freakish thunderstorm brought heavy wind gusts, lightening and rain through a portion of Carson City.
Wind brought down a large cottonwood tree into electric lines on Spear and Nevada streets near Division shortly after 5 p.m., knocking out power to some 500 customers, said Faye Andersen, spokeswoman for NV Energy. Power was restored at 7:25 tonight for all but about 7 or 8 customers because of a damaged transformer, she said. It would take a few more hours in repair time to get the remaining customers powered back up, she added.
The westbound lane of Spooner was also closed briefly because of a weather-related issue, according to Carson City dispatchers.
No injuries were reported in the storm burst, which, at its peak, lasted for about five minutes.
Meanwhile, a Red Flag warning remains in effect through 6 p.m. on Sunday for the Carson City region. The warning was issued today because of low humidity and anticipated afternoon thunderstorms, much like what Carson City experienced tonight.
