Carson City School District won't require masks, will return to full in-person learning this fall
The Carson City School District reopened its doors to students and faculty last school year after a six-month summer break. However, this reopening didn’t come without stipulations, as both students and teachers prepared for changes such as hybrid learning and face coverings inside of buildings.
With school planned to start on August 16, CCSD decided on their mask policy as well as an entire reopening plan for the upcoming year at the last school board meeting. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak returned authority of mitigation of COVID-19 to local school officials, according to the official school reopening plan.
According to public information officer Dan Davis, the district is not requiring face masks but is highly encouraging the use of them for those unvaccinated over the age of two years old. Additionally, the entire district will be back in session for in-person, on campus learning five days a week.
“Of course if there are localized outbreaks or other things we may enforce like a temporary use of face masks,” Davis said. “We kind of put a stipulation in there too. If the Department of (Education) or other governing bodies force a mandate, then that’s what we would have to employ.”
The new policies will apply to both teachers and students within CCSD. According to Davis, most of the teaching population within the district is vaccinated.
The next school board meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 27 at the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William Street. Go here to read the full safe reopening plan for the 2021-2022 school year.
