Carson City Sheriff’s Office overwhelmed with acts of kindness during tense weeks
Like many who learned of the rumor of a so-called “Day of Rage” civil disobedience protest to take place in 37 U.S. cities including Carson City, there was a deep concern for the safety of local law enforcement after the July 7 shooting in Dallas that left five officers dead.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office and other agencies were well aware and prepared of what was determined to be a hoax and remained on high alert for the day along with the assistance of several agencies.
Since Dallas, there have been multiple gestures of kindness from community members to local law officers.
From food platter donations, to flowers and cards, there's been many random acts of kindness presented to the department, said Carson City Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Scott McDaniel. It’s the same kind of outpouring the sheriff’s office received in the days and weeks following the Aug. 15, 2015 shooting of Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Howell, who died in the line of duty.
On Friday as the Carson City Sheriff’s Office had its resources at the legislative complex, three people appeared at the CCSO administrative building and made a special delivery: Sub sandwiches for the returning officers and individually wrapped bags of assorted candy with a card attached to each one that offered messages of kindness, support, and even humor. “It was our goal to do something positive for our officers, and to have something positive come out of this,” said Jessica Mandoki of Carson City, who, along with her sister Megan Zich, and Zich’s 7-year-old daughter Hailey, and family friend Krista Mattice, put together the cards and candy. A tray of sandwiches was donated by Subway on William Street.
For the officers returning from their duties at the legislative complex, the gesture was overwhelming and a great way to end an otherwise tense week.
“We want to thank Jessica, Megan, Krista and Hailey for this very thoughtful gift,” said Sgt. Scott McDaniel. “Your message of support was well received and lifted our spirits for the day. You made a lot of officers smile.”
Also noteworthy, outside of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Friday, a citizen made a gesture as he did nearly a year ago after the shooting death of Deputy Carl Howell, by standing at attention and raising an American flag as officers drove into and out of the Sheriff’s Office complex.
