Public safety agencies to hold 'active shooter' drill tonight at Carson City Capitol Complex
Today, Wednesday from 5 to 10 p.m., the Capitol Complex grounds and associated buildings in Carson City will be closed to the public for first responder agencies to participate in a full scale “active shooter” drill.
According to the FBI between 2000 and 2016, nationwide, there were about 200 reported incidents which met the criteria of an active shooter event. Disproportionately, six of those incidents have been in Northern Nevada. An exercise such as this one is an important part of preparedness and can be applied to many types of coordinated multi-agency incidents and disaster responses.
During the exercise, the public may see an increased police presence around the Capitol Complex, with minimal disruption to traffic. There will be road closures on East Musser and East 5th Street between Carson and Stewart Street.
This event is hosted by the Department of Public Safety Capitol Police Division and would only be possible with the cooperation and support of the following agencies:
— Office of the Governor
— Office of the Attorney General
— Office of the Secretary of State
— Carson City Sheriff’s Office
— Carson City Fire Department
— Carson City Public Works
— DPS/Highway Patrol
— DPS/Division of Emergency Management
— DPS/General Services
— Nevada Legislative Police Department
— Nevada Supreme Court Marshal’s
— State of Nevada Public Works/Buildings and Grounds
A special thanks to all the individual community volunteers including the Truckee Meadows Community College Emergency Medical Services Program.
