Carson City welcomes new deputy, sheriff discusses community responsibility at ceremony
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office held a swearing in ceremony Thursday for Jacob Vanbeuge, who was welcomed as a new sheriff’s deputy.
Vanbeuge is a United States Army veteran and was presented with an army pin to wear on his uniform by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong following his badge pinning ceremony.
Sheriff Furlong thanked the families in attendance and spoke on the recent unrest in the community.
“It has been a challenging time. Very challenging,” said Furlong. “But we caution ourselves to be who we have been in the past and to carry ourselves and perform in the same manner that we have in the past. This department has done an outstanding job working inside this community and with this community, with the kids, with the families, and with the businesses.”
Furlong went on to say that as he read the Attorney General’s talking points (about law enforcement) for the upcoming session, he found the Carson City Sheriff’s Office is already doing the things listed in those talking points.
“That is a great credit to the folks who work here,” said Furlong.
Furlong then spoke about abuses happening across the country, and the fact that the Carson City Sheriff’s Office doesn't allow those kinds of abuses here in the capital city.
“Those agencies that stand above and don’t let themselves be thrown off track, that don’t let them carry out some of the abuses that we have obviously seen across the country, those agencies that stand professionally — that carry out their responsibilities — attract young (deputies) like this and to that end I thank you all very much.”
There will be another swearing in and promotion ceremony held next Thursday, June 2 in the Ormsby Room if the Sheriff’s Office.
