Carson City sheriff's deputies make arrests for domestic battery, DUI and drugs

A 65-year-old man was arrested Sunday for suspicion of DUI and obstruction, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

According to the report, deputies were dispatched to a location in reference to a man who pushed his wife. Deputies arrived and learned the suspect was attempting to leave. Deputies located the suspect in his vehicle and advised him several times to turn off his vehicle and get out, the report states.

The man eventually complied and was detained. Deputies were advised the man had been drinking in Reno at a festival and had driven home.

When he arrived he became irate because the victim had parked in his spot. He allegedly kicked the door to the victim's vehicle then went inside and yelled at her. She then called 911. Deputies learned the incident was verbal only and there was no visible injuries and no damage to the car.

The man was read his Miranda warning. A deputy noticed the man had an odor of alcohol coming from his person and his eyes were bloodshot, red and watery. He agreed to field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment on the tests. He provided a preliminary breath test of .217.

Based on the man being behind the wheel on a public roadway, his results of the standardized field sobriety tests, he was arrested for for suspicion of DUI. He was read a request for evidentiary testing and refused. He was taken to jail where the deputy applied for a telephonic search warrant to get a blood sample. The warrant was granted by a Carson City judge. Bail: $1,549.

In other arrests:
A 37-year-old woman was arrested Sunday for suspicion of misdemeanor domestic battery, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Deputies were dispatched to the area of West Musser and South Curry street and spoke with the victim and suspect, both of Reno, who were in Carson City for a Father's Day gathering with friends.

Through the course of the investigation, deputies learned the two were in an argument and that the suspect allegedly struck him in the right arm with a rock bracelet leaving a faint welt line across the arm. Also, while the two were in the vehicle, the suspect allegedly grabbed the steering wheel and attempted to steer the vehicle off the roadway, the report states.

The suspect stated she took her bracelet off and threw it, possibly hitting the victim. Based on the observed injury and the victim's claims, the woman was arrested for alleged domestic battery. Bail: $3,137.

— A 31-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday for a misdemeanor outside agency warrant out of East For Township Court. Bail: $300.

— A 29-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday for a warrant for gross misdemeanor possession of a prescription drug without a prescription. The warrant was issued June 8, 2023 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $1,500.

— A 45-year-old woman was arrested early Tuesday for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and lesser offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report. Monica Benjamin was taken into custody at 12:21 a.m. in the 500 block of North Carson Street. She was also booked misdemeanor possession of drug possession and a warrant out of Douglas County. Bail: $4,500.

— A 39-year-old Carson City woman, Jeanne Mae Blandford, was arrested Friday for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, a felony. Bail: $2,500.

— A 65-year-old California man was arrested Monday for suspicion of DUI second offense. According to the booking report, a deputy observed a red Dodge Dakota traveling southbound on North Carson street. He observed the vehicle make a right hand turn on West Telegraph, driving over the sidewalk curb with the right wheel. The vehicle was located and stopped in a parking space, where the man attempted to exit. He was told to get back into the truck and he did, the report states.

The officer made contact with the man and observed a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person and slurred speech. The man was asked if he had any alcohol to drink and he said that he did. He agreed to field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment on the tests. He provided a preliminary breath test of .203 and was arrested for suspicion of DUI. At jail he provided evidentiary tests of .143 and .143. He had a previous conviction of DUI in 2016. Bail: $2,637.

— A 63-year-old man was arrested Sunday for suspicion of battery. According to the booking report, a deputy was dispatched to a Hospitality Way location. Officers spoke with the victim who said the suspect approached him while he was in a seat and yelled at him, and then slapped his hand when he said he didn't want to buy the property the man was selling. The incident was recorded on a cell phone video.

A deputy spoke with the suspect who admitted to slapping the victim's hand. The victim wished to press charges. Bail: $1,137.

Members of the Rotary Club of Carson City will learn how its annual Educational Grant has helped local students at the club’s next meeting. Carson School District K-12 Curriculum & Assessment Coordinator Brittany Witter received the club’s Carson City School District’s Professional Development Center Grant last year with the goal of funding the “Literacy and Love of Reading through Social Studies” project.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Courtesy of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office: On May 3, 2024 at approximately 1430 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Central Lyon County, Carson City and Storey County Fire personnel to the area of 34 Newman Ln. for a report of motorhome on fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had spread and multiple other abandoned vehicles caught fire as well. No one was hurt or injured during the incident. The incident is currently under investigation, which is being conducted by the Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Division.

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Firefighters from Storey are also now responding.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Multiple vehicles on the property are engulfed in flame.

Around 2:15 p.m. a fire was reported at 34 Newman Lane in Mound House.

Firefighters from Carson City and Lyon County are enroute to the scene.

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, a student reported they saw a weapon. The incident was investigated and there was no weapon found. The lockdown has now been lifted and students are leaving the school.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Update 05-03-24 at 1:15 p.m.
One student has reported an alleged weapon sighting. It has not been corroborated, but school officials and the sheriff’s office are investigating out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The following update was provided by the district:

Carson High School was put on lockdown this afternoon around 12:15 p.m. No person was injured. There is an active situation being investigated in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will provide more information as it becomes known. The school is secure. Do not go to the school. No entrances will be permitted at time. The district will provide updates every 30 minutes. Expect the next update at 1:15 p.m.

Carson High School is currently on a lockdown as of 12:40 p.m. Friday, but there has been no incident reported according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Two School Resource Officers are on scene investigating why the alarm went off.

Carson High School Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education students competed at the three-day state conference last month for Nevada Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is today, Thursday, May 2 at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. The memorial brings hundreds to the capitol grounds. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrested three for their alleged involvement in business thefts last month on Topsy Lane south of Carson City.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.
