Father's Day weekend in Carson City begins with 2018 Stewart Indian School Pow Wow
A long line of Native American dancers dressed in ceremonial costumes honored the sacred circle of the parade grounds Friday evening to open the annual Stewart Indian School Father's Day Pow Wow, a tradition that dates back more than a quarter century.
Many pow wows are held indoors because of weather's effect on elegant, ornament-rich costuming. But the Stewart Indian School in South Carson City offers a lush, picturesque venue for a rare outdoor pow wow event.
In addition to traditional tribal dancing and drum beats, visitors are treated to numerous arts and crafts vendors selling authentic American Indian-made products, as well as food vendors who make the beloved Indian tacos at the Stewart Indian School Pow Wow.
The Stewart Indian School opened in 1890 and operated nine decades before its closure in 1980. The Pow Wow has been a Stewart Indian School tradition since 1981. It has been held over Father's Day weekend each year since 1990.
