Douglas County joins Carson City law enforcement in providing opioid overdose nasal spray
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday that it is issuing its deputies nasal Narcan or Naloxone to persons suffering from suspected or accidental opioid overdose.
The agency joins the Carson City Sheriff's Office and other departments in Nevada in providing deputies training to carry and administer the emergency nasal spray to those suspected of opioid overdose.
Carson City has been training and issuing the spray to deputies for around 8 months, said Sheriff Ken Furlong.
"It's all part of the statewide opioid response," said Furlong.
The Lyon County Sheriff's Office is looking to begin a similar program in the near future.
Due to the possibility of law enforcement officers coming into accidental contact with opioids, specifically Fentanyls, whether by accidental inhalation or skin absorption it is important that deputies be aware of this possibility and be able to administer Nasal Narcan if available to counter act the effects of accidental exposure, said DSCO Capt. Dan Coverley.
In addition to Nasal Narcan each DCSO deputy will be issued personal protective equipment specific to Fentanyl exposure. Each kit contains a protective gown, face mask, gloves and booties.
Douglas County's Nasal Narcan and personal protective equipment were obtained with the assistance of the Nevada Attorney General’s Office and the Quad County Public Health Preparedness Office.
"The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is extremely thankful for the close working relationship with both agencies and their dedication to public safety in Douglas County," said Coverley.
