Carson City area weather: More expected heavy rain prompts Flood Watch through Monday
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Flood Watch from Sunday 1 p.m. to Monday, 9 p.m. for Carson City, much of Western Nevada and the Lake Tahoe area.
Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible for portions of California and western Nevada, including the Greater Lake Tahoe area, greater Reno and Carson City and Carson Valley areas, Mineral and Southern Lyon counties in California, Lassen Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierra counties and Mono County.
Slow moving thunderstorms will produce areas of heavy rainfall with localized rainfall rates on the order of 1.00 to 1.50 inches per hour. Soils are already saturated with creeks, streams, and rivers running full due to ongoing snowmelt. It will not take as much rain to cause excessive runoff, weather service forecasters said.
Excessive runoff may result in flooding of creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations, forecasters said. Flooding may also happen in poor drainage and urban areas such as what happened Saturday in Carson City.
Area creeks and streams are running high and could flood with more heavy rain. Also, heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding and debris flows near burn scars and steep terrain. Go here for flood information.
