Lyon County Sheriff: Cockfighting ring busted in Silver Springs, 59 roosters found dead
Lyon County Animal Services and Sheriff's Office deputies discovered an illegal cockfighting operation and more than 50 dead roosters in Silver Springs on Saturday.
At around 12:41 p.m. Lyon County Animal Services received an anonymous complaint in reference to suspicious activity happening at a 10th Street residence in Silver Springs. According to the caller they were hearing a large commotion, specifically a large number of roosters crowing. Animal Service requested the assistance of the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.
When Animal Services and deputies arrived on scene they entered the property where numerous people and vehicles were observed. A deputy passed several people and entered an "open air" barn and approached an area where a large congregation of people were standing. In doing so, the deputy witnessed hand-to-hand wagering and observed roosters fighting, according to a Lyon County Sheriff's Office sergeant.
The subjects engaged in the event began to flee the scene, with most being detained.
Upon further investigation, 59 deceased roosters were discovered in the vicinity of the barn. Approximately 50 to 75 live chickens were seized as well as numerous implements commonly used when fighting animals.
The investigation remains active and ongoing, says LCSO.
