Carson City arrests: Man jailed for allegedly making threats with box cutter

A 59-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday in the area of Russell and Long streets for felony suspicion of two counts assault with a deadly weapon, parole and probation violation and misdemeanor obstructing, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Thomas Alan Thorton was booked into jail on the charges. According to the arrest report, deputies were called to a gas station in the 2600 block of Highway 50 East regarding a subject brandishing a knife.

The man allegedly threatened two people at the gas station with a box-cutter and acted like he had a gun in a holster. The suspect took off running as officers arrived.
He was located and refused a deputy’s commands to take his hands out of his pockets. A second man with the suspect complied to the officer’s commands. The suspect yelled profanities at the deputy and then took off running again.

Deputies chased the man. When he stopped he pulled his hands out, made a gun gesture with his fingers and pointed them at the officer. He threatened to shoot the officer and then said “let’s go to the boxing ring,” the arrest report states.

A sergeant arrived on scene, and both ordered the man to the ground. After multiple requests and at taser point, the suspect complied and was arrested. It was determined the other subject with the suspect was not involved in the alleged threats made with the box cutter. Bail: $40,422 for the assault with deadly weapon and obstructing charges, and a no bail hold for parole and probation violation.

— A transient, Jason Cooper, was arrested Thursday, 11:45 p.m. in the area of I-580 onramp at Highway 50 for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor illegal dumping warrant out of Dayton Township, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. A small baggie of methampheamine and pipe were recovered. Bail: $4,777.

— A 25-year-old Carson City man, Jesus Alberto Medina, was arrested Thursday, 8:20 p.m. in the area of William and Saliman streets for suspicion of felony parole and probation violation and possession of a controlled substance. He was also arrested for four misdemeanors: Possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a revoked license, driving without a seatbelt and making an improper turn at an intersection.

According to the arrest report, a deputy made a traffic stop for a moving violation, spoke with the driver, who informed the deputy he did not have a valid license. A records check showed he had been arrested previously for driving on a revoked license. A canine did an exterior sniff of the vehicle.

Parole and probation was advised the man was driving on a revoked license. P&P advised it wanted him be arrested. During the inventory of the vehicle, deputies located drug paraphernalia, and a pen tube with methamphetamine. Medina is being held without bail in lieu of a hearing.

— A 48-year-old Mound House man, Bruce Allen Meyer, was arrested Thursday, 4:34 p.m. in the 1400 block of North Roop Street for suspicion felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. A meth pipe and baggie of methamphetamine were recovered. Bail: $3,637.

— A 43-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday, 5:40 p.m. in the area of Fifth and Division streets for misdemeanor warrants of violation of a suspended sentence and contempt of court. Bail: $3,090.

— A 52-year-old Carson City man was booked into jail Thursday, 8:15 p.m. for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant. Bail: $15,000.

— A 26-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Thursday, 2:12 p.m. in 1000 block of East Fifth Street for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant. Bail: $3,000.

— A 60-year-old transient was arrested Thursday, 7:19 a.m. in the 500 block of East William Street for suspicion of three counts misdemeanor making threats.

According to the arrest report, the man allegedly exposed a 10-inch buck knife without pulling it out of the sheath and made threats against three others. All subjects involved appeared to be intoxicated. The suspect, who was putting the knife in his waistband when deputies arrived, said he did not pull a knife, but did expose it. All witnesses advised they were threatened and feared for their safety. Bail: $1,836.

— A transient was arrested Thursday, 1:31 a.m. in the 2100 block of East William Street for four counts misdemeanor violation of restraining order and conditions. According to the arrest report, deputies were called to a domestic dispute in a parking lot. Officers learned the man had two protection orders, and was in violation. He provided a preliminary breath test of .171, also in violation of the protection order. Bail: $8,274.

— A Ventura, Calif., man was arrested Thursday, 6:09 a.m., in the area of College Parkway and I-580 for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI, driving the wrong way and not having a driver’s license in possession.

According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to locate a silver truck driving northbound in the southbound lanes on I-580. A deputy located the vehicle stopped at College Parkway west of I-580. A deputy approached the vehicle and the man attempted to start it. The officer instructed him several times to turn off the vehicle, which wouldn’t start. The driver was ordered out of the vehicle. He identified himself and said he did not have a driver’s license.

He originally denied driving and said he was sleeping on the side of the road because he had been drinking and was not OK to drive. He later said he was driving the wrong way on the freeway and pulled off, stopping at the curb. He told the deputy he was drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana and takes Xanax, the arrest report states.

A reporting witness arrived on scene and identified the vehicle as the one going the wrong way.

The suspect refused standardized field sobriety tests. He told officers he knew he was drunk and did not want to attempted the tests. He would not provide a breath sample. A jail he refused to evidentiary testing.A judge granted a warrant for a blood draw. Bail: $1,281.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

On April 24, 2024, at approximately 4:48 a.m., the Nevada State Police responded to a crash at the location of IR580 southbound near mile marker CC01 in Carson City, Nevada. (Near the Snyder Ave. overpass).

Each year, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosts an open house event as a way to connect families, deputies, non-profits and more. This year the event takes place May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Douglas County officials have announced that construction will begin soon on the first phase of the Muller Parkway Project. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Minden and Gardnerville, offering an alternative route to the main U.S. Route 395 through town. The decision comes as the County moves to fill its requirement to construct 2.4 miles of two-lane road by 2025.
