Carson City's Greenhouse Project to unveil new expansion in June; plus stop by Thursday for a plant sale
Carson City's The Greenhouse Project will be hosting an open house on June 6 to celebrate its most recent expansion at the Carson High School campus.
The site expansion is on additional land at the high school that the Carson City School District is allowing TGP to use to start both composting and nursery plant operations.
"It's been in the works since last year, but what we're doing now is formally launching the site operations," said Executive Director Jon Ruiter.
Since receiving district and Planning Commission approval last year, TGP been busy with site improvements, including grading, fencing, a new concrete pad, two new 20' X 48' hoop houses, and irrigation.
"We also purchased a continuous flow-through worm composting system with the help of a grant from the Carson City Rotary Club, which we are very grateful for," said Ruiter.
Besides contributing to The Greenhouse Project's mission of growing and giving, these new programs further develop their teaching opportunity goal, particularly with the recycling-of-food-waste education for the Carson City School District students as well as educational outreach to the Carson City restaurant community, according to Ruiter.
"The purpose is to provide long term composting of the school district’s pre-consumer food waste, and eventually expand to area restaurants and arborists," said Ruiter. "Moreover, these programs will grow two funding streams for TGP's operations by providing native plants and quality composting material to the public via regional nurseries and our own plant sales."
In addition, Ruiter says that vermicomposting and its applications also help the environment by reducing landfill waste and greenhouse emissions and augments crop production when used to improve soil quality.
The open house will take place on June 6 at 11 a.m. which will allow the public to see the new projects at TGP.
Prior to that, you can also drop in tomorrow, Thursday, May 26 for the drop-in plant sale for all your summer nursery plant needs!
