Regional Pop Warner opens investigation into Carson City league, asks community for 'composure'
Nevada Sagebrush League Pop Warner and the Pacific Northwest Region Pop Warner issued a joint statement regarding the recent reveal that a cheer coach’s husband is a registered sex offender who was allowed to participate in what Pop Warner calls an “unofficial” capacity.
The joint release stated that an investigation has been opened which will be “thorough, objective and urgent.”
The release also stated that the season is expected to continue in Carson City, but that a 30 day pause has been instituted to allow for the external review.
“Our goal is to ensure all legal regulations and athlete-safety procedures have been followed, and that the program is providing a safe and positive environment for young athletes, as well as coaches, volunteers, and parents,” the release stated.
Carson City Pop Warner (CCPW) added to the release on their Facebook page, which said they “agree with the decision” to investigate and “alleviate recent concerns.”
However, CCPW stated the investigation was to “verify that all proper safety procedures, policies and guidelines are in place and being followed.”
CCPW said that board members are being threatened, which the regional representatives spoke out against.
“While we understand diverging opinions and concerns about the situation, we have been dismayed by the tone of the disagreement,” the regional release stated. “Board members, their families and other associated with the program have been subject to threats of violence. That is not acceptable. Such threats are frightening to the families involved, dangerous and illegal, and we strongly ask that people treat this situation with composure, respect and patience.”
CCPW did not comment on the 30 day pause, but said that they voted themselves to postpone sign-ups which were initially scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday May 20.
“A new date will be announced as soon as we can ensure a safe event for our CCPW family.”
At the time of publication, there has been no announcement of the cheer coach/cheer coordinator stepping down or being dismissed.
It was revealed on social media earlier this week that a registered sex offender, who admitted to and was convicted of having sex with a child when he was 29, has been regularly attending practices, games, and trips with the cheer team his wife coaches for, with the approval of the CCPW board members.
Board President Austin Matthews spoke in support of both the cheer coordinator and her husband, stating it was a "one time mistake" that occurred between "two consenting individuals."
