Q&D Construction picked for Downtown Carson Street Urban Design Project

After reviewing proposals and finalists, the Carson City Board of Supervisors and Public Works have picked Q&D Construction to serve as the Construction Manager at Risk for the Downtown Carson Street Urban Design Project, said Carson City Public Works Downtown Project Manager Danny Rotter.
“We are thrilled to welcome Q&D to this team. Their proven track record for success will be a great fit for this project,” said Rotter regarding the Monday announcement. “We believe their dedication to the project and sincere understanding of what Carson City needs will greatly benefit the project and the people the construction will impact most.”
Earlier this year, Lumos & Associates (Lumos) was selected by the city to lead the design team. Lumos worked closely with city staff throughout the CMAR selection process and, they believe that Q&D’s experience and professional approach to partnering will help to expedite the process.
“By hiring Q&D in the role of CMAR, we are able to solve construction and design conflicts before they even arise,” said Mike Bennett, location principal for Lumos & Associates. “We will work closely with their project team to assure an efficient construction process.”
By bringing in Q&D now as a CMAR, the design and construction teams can work closely together throughout the process to assure that all proposed plans are feasible and cost effective. Additionally, the project team will work closely with community members and business and property owners to reduce the impact of construction on Carson City residents and businesses
“We are very excited to begin work on this project,” said Jeff Bean, vice president of heavy and civil engineering for Q&D. “We have seen time and time again that being involved early on in the process helps the project stay on track and allows us to complete the work in a less impactful way for the community.”
Lumos will present a 30 percent completed design to community members in June. From there the two companies will work closely with Carson City Public Works to further develop the project.
The Carson Street Design project is one of the capital improvement projects approved by the city and is estimated to cost approximately $10-11 million and funded from a 1/8th cent sales tax increase and Public Works funding. Design for Curry Street improvements and a pedestrian plaza on Third Street are included in the design contract, though construction of the Curry Street improvements will come two years after the Carson Street and Third Street improvements. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2016.
Carson City Public Works is comprised of multiple divisions including the operations divisions of Streets, Water, Sewer, Storm Water, Wastewater, Environmental and Landfill. It also includes the Engineering Division that oversees all Capital Projects; the Transportation Division, which includes RTC, JAC, and CAMPO; and the Utility Billing Division.
